The Titans of Graettinger-Terril/Ruthven-Ayrshire had a solid first full week of basketball with three victories. On Monday, Dec. 2, the Titans defeated West Bend-Mallard/Gilmore City-Bradgate, and then bested River Valley on Friday before traveling north to defeat Estherville Lincoln Central on Saturday night.
This past Monday, Dec. 2. the Titans defeated West Bend-Mallard/Gilmore City-Bradgate's Lady Wolverines by a 52-34 tally.
Both teams struggled to put the ball in the hoop in the first quarter, as GT/RA would finally take a 6-2 lead after the opening frame was completed. In the second quarter, the Titans found their offense and added 20 points to take a 26-11 lead at halftime.
In the third quarter, GT/RA continued to pull away from the Lady Wolverines, and moved out to a 37-23 advantage before taking the 52-34 final victory in Cornbelt Conference play.
For the Titans, Lauren Flaharty and Marly Bakken both tallied 12 points each to spark the win, while Brooke Hoffman added seven points. Grace Skattebo and Alex Oleson both tallied six points each, with Katie Olesen tallying four points. Morgan McGrauth and Cassie Olesen both chipped in two points and Emily Moran added a free throw.
For the Lady Wolverines, Lauren Link led all scorers with 17 points, while Ashley Schmidt scored eight and Anna Zaugg added four points. Taylor Elbert and Laura Fehr both scored two points each and Taylor Fogarty added a free throw.
Friday night, Dec. 6, the Titan girls defeated River Valley by a 48-30 tally.
GT/RA would take an early 17-11 lead over the visitors, and when on to lead at the intermission by a 31-17 margin. Good defense by the Titans held River Valley to five points in the third period as GT/RA increased their lead to 42-22 to enter the final stanza, and then got the reserves in to take the 48-30 final victory.
Seniors Brooke Hoffman and Grace Skattebo led the scoring on Friday with 12 points each, while Katie Olesen and Morgan McGrauth both scored six points each. Marly Bakken came away with four points , while Lauren Flaharty and Emily Moran both tallied three points each and Alex Oleson added two points.
On Saturday night, the Titans made a short trip up Highway Four to take on Estherville Lincoln Central, and upset the Midgets in a 49-32 decision.
The Titan girls opened the game at full throttle, offensively, as they held ELC?to just a lone bucket in taking a 14-2 lead over the Midgets.
However, the Midgets found their offense in the second quarter and matched GT/RA bucket for bucket, but trailed the Titans 29-16 at the intermission.
In the second half of the contest, the two teams both went cold, offensively, with very little scoring as the Titans held on to a 37-25 lead to start the final quarter.
Graettinger/Terril/Ruthven-Ayrshire would turn up the defensive pressure in the final quarter and went on to outscore Estherville Lincoln Central 12-7 to record the 49-32 victory.
Marly Bakken would pace the Titans with 13 points, while Grace Skattebo added 11 tallies to the effort. Lauren Flaharty came away with seven points, while Morgan McGrauth tallied six markers. Katie Olesen, Brooke Hoffman and Alex Oleson all scored fourth points each to round out the Titans' scoring.
GT/RA hosts St. Mary's tonight and North Union on Friday night.
