Ethel Irene (Heng) Cody was born on June 19, 1912, in Barnesville, Minnesota, to John A. and Elsie (Wilson) Heng. At the age of six her mother died and she moved to Palo Alto County to live with her aunt and uncle, Susan and Morris Finnestad, and was later adopted by them. She received her education in rural schools and graduated from Emmetsburg High School in 1930 with the addition of normal training.
On March 24, 1934, Ethel was united in marriage to Melvin Cody at St. John's Parsonage in Fairmont, Minnesota. To this union five children were born. Ethel and Melvin made their home near Cylinder and moved to Emmetsburg in 1968.
Ethel received her teaching endorsement from Des Moines and summer school at the Iowa Teachers College in Cedar Falls. She taught in Fairfield Township and Freedom Township rural schools in Palo Alto County, leaving after eight years to raise her family and help on the family farm. She served as Secretary to the Board of Education for Fairfield Township for several years, and later worked at Quality Cafe and Reit's Bake Shop. She was devoted to her family and friends and enjoyed the time spent with them. Most of all she loved to bake and spent numerous hours making dozens upon dozens of her famous Norwegian "kringla".
