Ruth Aileen Arney (Petersen, aka "Petie") passed away Monday, Dec. 16, 2013 at home in Surrey, British Columbia, Canada, aged 88.
A memorial service for Ruth will be held Spring 2014, in Ringsted.
Daughter of Lars Albert and Ida Clara (Geronsin) Petersen, Ruth was born March 31, 1925 in Ringsted. She graduated from Ringsted High School in 1942 and Iowa State Teacher's College in 1945. On Sept. 4, 1947 Ruth married Robert F. Arney in Anchorage, Alaska where she was working as a secretary for the Air Force.
In the late 1950's, following brief residences in the Kansas City and Washington, D.C. areas, Ruth fulfilled her dream of traveling, moving with her husband and three children first to London, England, then Spain, and finally Germany. Over the next 22 years in Europe, she traveled extensively (Egypt, the Holy Land, Russia), and also participated in many golf and bridge tournaments. In 1980, after Bob's retirement, they returned to the US, living in Washington State and California before settling back in Ruth's home state of Iowa, (Ringsted, then Emmetsburg). After her husband's death in 2007, Ruth returned to Ringsted and enjoyed living in the town where she grew up and helping at her daughter Leslie's art store. In 2011, due to declining health, she made a final move to live with family near Vancouver, British Columbia.
Ruth was a woman of strong faith and commitment to Christ, and active in church. She was known for her spunky spirit, endless energy, kind heart and generosity. To relax, she enjoyed playing bridge, golfing into her 80's, doing crosswords, playing Chinese checkers (usually the champ!), and always had a jigsaw puzzle going.
Preceding Ruth in death were her husband of 60 years, Robert; her parents; sister, Georgia; and brothers Roy and Lawrence. Left to cherish Ruth's memory are her children, Theresa Arney (Glen Burnie, MD); Chris-topher (Kristine) Arney (Surrey, BC Canada); Leslie (Kennith) Lowery (Rochester, MN); seven grandchildren, Heather; Nathanael, Zachary, Noah and Clare; Mesha and Tanuel; seven great grandchildren; and other family and friends.
