SIBLEY -An outstanding performance by Emmetsburg freshman Tanner Lundgren will see E-Hawk Wrestling represented at this week's Iowa State Wrestling Championships. Lundgren earned the District Championship at 106 pounds on Saturday to qualify for the State Tournament, which gets underway this Thursday, Feb. 20, at Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines.
"Tanner really worked hard this past week to get ready for today,"?noted Emmetsburg Head Wrestling Coach Jared Pickett. "He came out with a lot of determination and really wrestled well. I'm very proud of him,"
After qualifying for the 1A District meet as the second place Sectional tourney finisher, Lundgren was matched up against the Sectional Winner from the Woodbury Central Sectional tournament on Saturday.
Against Jordan Robinson of Woodbury Central, Lundgren came out on the opening whistle and quickly took Robinson to the mat, putting the Wildcat wrestler on his back and earning a 1:20 win by fall to advance to the title match.
Meeting up with his sectional nemesis, Skylar Solko of Alta-Aurelia for the District title, Lundgren was taken down in the first period to trail 2-0, and did not score in the second period. But in the third period, things changed quickly.
With Solko choosing to start down in the third period, Lundgren wrapped Solko up and put him in a pinning situation, but Solko "tapped out", forcing the officials to stop the match for injury, but awarded Lundgren four near-fall points to make the score 4-3 with less than a minute to go in the match.
After re-starting the match, Solko would earn an escape point, but Lundgren would hold on to earn the championship with the 4-3 decision victory, and also avenge two earlier losses to Solko in the process.
Lundgren will open his State Tournament appearance at Wells Fargo Arena Thursday night starting at 7 p.m. for the first round of Class 1A action.
