Lady E-Hawks Bow Out Of Post-Season

February 25, 2014
by Dan Voigt , Emmetsburg News

MANSON?- The season came to a close Friday night for Emmetsburg's Lady E-Hawks in a 32-42 loss to Manson Northwest Webster in Class 2A Regional Semi-final tournament play. The loss ended Emmetsburg's season with a mark of 13 wins against 10 losses.

After coming up with a win in their Regional tournament opener on Tuesday, the Lady E-Hawks were tasked with meeting Manson again, just eight days after ending the regular season in a loss to the Cougars on Emmetsburg's home floor.

Friday's meeting saw the Cougars jump out to a 12-3 advantage after one quarter of play in Manson, as Emmetsburg struggled to get shots to fall in the first quarter, and didn't get a bucket until over two minutes of the contest had expired.

The first quarter was also costly to Emmetsburg as guard Michaela Rehm took an elbow to the nose midway through the quarter from Manson's Taylor Wood, and would not return to the game following the injury.

In the second quarter, the Lady E-Hawks began to get a few shots against the aggressive pressure defense of the Cougars, but struggled on the glass as Manson took a 20-11 lead at half-time.

In the third quarter, Emmetsburg continued to struggle with shooting, as shot after shot would rim in and out of the cylinder, or fall off the side, while Manson would connect on nearly every shot, but were held in check by an aggressive Emmetsburg defense.

With Manson holding a 30-18 lead to start the final quarter, Emmetsburg was able to put together a rally in the final eight minutes.

Shots began to fall as Emmetsburg was able to drive to the basket more often in the quarter. The Lady E-Hawks narrowed Manson's lead to eight points, 36-28 with 1:00 to go, but an exchange of fouls and free throws in the final minute would see Emmetsburg outscore the Cougars 14-12, but it was too little too late as Manson took the 10-point, 42-32 win.

For Emmetsburg, senior Tegan Olson finished her career with 12 points, while Bailey Naig added 10 points to the effort. Ashton Connelly and Alexa Naig would both score four points each on the night, while Michaela Rehm tallied two points before being injured.

The Lady E-Hawks bid farewell to seniors Tegan Olson and Hadley Egland as the season ends.
