Funeral service for Mary Gappa of Ayrshire was held Saturday, March 8, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Ayrshire. The Rev. Clem Currans was the Celebrant.
Interment was in Calvary Cemetery, Ayrshire. The Martin-Mattice Funeral Home in Emmetsburg was in charge of arrangements.
Mary Catherine Gappa, daughter of Nicholas and Margaret "Maggie" (Zeller) Thilges, was born Nov. 29, 1929, near St. Joseph, IA. She graduated from St. Joseph High School in 1947.
On April 15, 1953, Mary was united in marriage to Robert Emmet Gappa at St. Joseph's Church.
Mary was a devoted and faithful member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church and Altar Society. She was also a long time current member of the Court of St. Joseph, C.D. of A. Mary took care of collecting and counting the collection money from the church each week.
Mary was the leader of the 4-H Club, Silver Lake Wide Awakes, for many years. Mary and Bob loved to square dance and they were members of the Mallard Pepper Steppers and enjoyed dancing at the Plantation and the Woodcliff ballrooms.
Mary passed away Tuesday, March 4, 2014 near Emmetsburg, at the age of 84. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Robert; brothers, Raymond, Alfred, Bernard, Norbert, Jake, Mark Thilges and infant brother, Edmond; sisters, Marcella Smith and Martha Kayser; and four stillborn grandchildren.
She is survived by her children, Elizabeth (Mark) O'Clair of Traer, William Gappa of Ayrshire, Patrick (Sandy) Gappa of Cylinder, Jane (Gary) Bissen of Earling, Janet (Greg) Meister of North Liberty, Kathryn Morse of Bancroft, Helen (Steve) Loerts of Spencer, and Mary Ann (Ron) Mader of Mallard; 23 grandchildren and 18 great grandchildren; sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Wanda Thilges, Bonnie Thilges, Marquerite and Dick Dale, and Mary Estelle and Elvin Godfredson.
