LAURENS - Both Graettinger-Terril/Ruthven-Ayrshire and the West Bend-Mallard/Gilmore City-Bradgate Wolverine and Lady Wolverine track teams will send entries to the state track and field championships this week in Des Moines. The qualifications came at Thursday's Class 1A District/Regional meet at Laurens.
For the Titans, Jake Wegener will compete in the high jump after jumping 5'10" in the district meet. Teammate Marcus Girres will run in the 200 meter dash after qualifying with a time of :23.54.
For the Lady Wolverines, Anna Zaugg will run in the 1500 meter run at the state meet after qualifying with a time of 5:22.10.
Also qualifying are the Lady Wolverines' Sprint Medley, with Harrison Schmidt, Ashley Schmidt, Portlind Schmidt and Maddy Gehrt with a time of 1:58.92. The Distance Medley, with Ashley Schmidt, Portlind Schmidt, Maddy Gehrt and Anna Zaugg, also qualified for state after running a 4:30.52 Thursday.
For the Wolverines, Davey Jergens is a double qualifier, as he earned berths in the 100 meter dash with a time of :11.59 and the 200 meter dash with a time of :23.29.
The Wolverines will also send the boys 4x800 relay, as the foursome of Jeff Riesenberg, Nolan Grimm, Harmon Atwood and Jesse Zinnel qualified for the state meet with their time of 8:48.53.
The State Track and Field Championships get underway on Thursday morning at 9 a.m. on the Jim Duncan Track at Drake Stadium in Des Moines. Class 1A and 4A competitions will take place in the morning on Thursday and Friday, with Class 2A and 3A competing in the afternoon and evenings and finals Saturday.
