To the Editor:
Fifty years ago, Lyndon B. Johnson declared the "Unconditional War on Poverty."?For 50 years, Upper Des Moines Opportunity, Inc. (UDMO), along with other Community Action Agencies, have helped individuals and families overcome poverty and advocate for those facing hard times.
In fiscal year 2013, UDMO?assisted 937 individuals in 437 Palo Alto County households. UDMO Palo Alto County Outreach provides basic services for local families in need.
A variety of locally funded services such as food and non-food pantries, meat, housekeeping supplies, holiday projects, and emergency utility or rent assistance are offered to families in crisis situations. These UDMO services, in collaboration with other agencies, churches, businesses and service organizations, provide support to families facing difficult times.
Palo Alto County Outreach is proud of its "neighbor helping neighbor"?approach to assist families and the value of providing a 'hand up'. UDMO Palo Alto County Outreach, along with other UDMO services such as FaDDS, Weatherization, Low Income Heating Energy Assistance, Emergency Housing, and various other programs, assist us with meeting our Community Action Promise that "Community Action changes people's lives, embodies the spirit of hope, improves communities, and makes America a better place to live. We care about the entire community, and we are dedicated to helping people help themselves and each other."
Together we are making a difference with low-income and at-risk individuals and families in Palo Alto County.
Thank you for those who have generously supported UDMO?over the past 50 years!
