Lester O. Miller 1918-2014

Funeral service for Lester Miller of Spencer, and formerly from Emmetsburg, will be 11 a.m. Wednesday, June 4, at Joyce Funeral Home in Emmetsburg. Burial is in Evergreen Cemetery, Emmetsburg.

The family will greet friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

Lester O. Miller was born July 31, 1918, the son of Fred and Clara (Fox) Miller in Des Moines. He attended Des Moines North High School before enlisting in the United States Army where he served during World War II.

After his service, Les was united in marriage to Alta "Bill" Lowe in Des Moines. Les and Bill lived in the Des Moines area where Les and his brother, Joe, ran Miller Brothers Painting. Later, the couple made their home in northwest Iowa. He and Bill owned and operated Reed's Run Resort and the Lakes Hotel in Spirit Lake. They resided in Emmetsburg, Estherville and Spirit Lake before moving to Spencer where they retired.

Les enjoyed fishing, taking trips to Jackpot Junction, the Wild Rose, and especially vacations with Bill to Las Vegas. He enjoyed debating, and he will be remembered for his great charm.

On Saturday, May 31, 2014, Les passed away at the Spencer Municipal Hospital in Spencer. He was 95.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Bill; parents; two brothers: Ralph and Joe Miller; two sisters: Helen Gahman and Dorothy Day.

Left to cherish his memory are his nieces, Joyce Wentworth, Sandy Bemis, Karen Scheldroup and Sherrie Cassem; two nephews, Ronald and David Miller; a brother-in-law, Jim Myers of Spencer; and two close friends, Russ Momsen and Ellen Ackerman.
