Solid Waste Rate Hike For Emmetsburg

July 10, 2014
by Jane Whitmore , Emmetsburg News

Emmetsburg residents will see a bit of an increase in their solid waste collection fee this month.

Effective July 1, solid waste collection fees will increase 50-cents a month for residential customers. The senior discount fee will still be offered. Commercial charges will go up $4 per month. Residents will still be able to place two trash bags at the curb each week.

Action on the increase in rates was taken at the June 23 meeting of Emmetsburg City Council.

In other business, John Kerber appeared before the council on behalf of the First United Methodist Church.

Kerber informed the council of the church's development plans that include a 60-by-80 foot building across the street, north of the church. He proposed closing half of 8th Street, from Broadway to the alley, to allow for safe passage from the church to the new facility. The alley from Main Street to 7th Street (behind the Methodist and Lutheran churches) would remain open.

Kerber requested the council consider the proposal and give him an answer at the next meeting.

"The church is ready to build that building," he said.
