RUTHVEN A full weekend of events and activities has been finalized for the 22nd Annual Bully Bullhead Weekend in Ruthven and the Lost Island Lake area. Activities will get underway on Thursday, July 10 and conclude on Sunday, July 13 with something for all ages during the event.
Activities begin this evening, Thursday, at the Ruthven American Legion Post 33 hall with a benefit supper to support the Freedom Rock Project. The supper will be a free-will offering and will begin serving at 5 p.m. At 6 p.m. at the Legion, Korean War Historian Merry Helm will present a program on the Korean War and the local tie-in to a pair of Ruthven area residents.
On Friday, the activities begin at 8 a.m. with the Bully Bullhead Tractor Ride. Registration gets underway at 7 a.m. adjacent to the Ruthven Community Care Center. The ride will leave at 8 a.m. and wind its way around Lost Island Lake and the region for a leisurely ride.
From 4 to 6 p.m., a pork patty feed is planned at the Iowa State Bank parking lot downtown. In Centennial Park a Co-Ed Three-on-Three basketball tournament for youth in grades 4-8 will take place starting at 5 p.m. and a Three-on-Three tournament for high school age players will also get underway at 5 p.m. in Centennial Park.
The Citizen of the Year Presentation ceremonies are scheduled for 5:40 p.m. at the Iowa State Bank parking lot and Friday's activities will conclude with the Kids' Pedal Pull, adjacent to Sacred Heart Catholic Church, starting at 6 p.m.
Saturday will be filled with activities and events throughout the day and into the night. A Bullhead fishing contest gets underway for specially tagged bullheads at 7 a.m. and continues through the day. Citywide garage sales start at 7:30 a.m., along with the United Methodist Men's Yard Sale at the church and the UMW Bake Sale and Coffee at the church from 7 to 10 a.m. A garage sale for the Freedom Rock project will also take place at the American Legion hall from 7:30 to 12:30 p.m.
Registration for the annual Bully Bullhead 5K, 10K and Fun Runs will begin at 7:30 a.m. at Huston Park with the run to start at 8 a.m. through Huston Park at Lost Island Lake. Also starting at 8 a.m. will be the Antique Tractor and machinery display next to the Care Center. A slo-pitch softball tournament also starts at 8 a.m. at the Ruthven-Ayrshire athletic fields.
The Lost Island Protective Association's Bully Bullhead Bike Ride begins at 9 a.m. from downtown, with registration beginning at 8 a.m. For the younger set, inflatables will be open starting at 9 a.m. in the Iowa State Bank parking lot, sponsored by the Ruthven Community Care Center.
Slide Shows on the history of the Ruthven Community will be offered from 9 a.m. through 4 p.m. at the Ruthven Public Library by former resident Sandra Dvorsky, along with the Friends of the Library used book sale.
There will be food as well, as the United Methodist Women will serve ice cream and pie at the Ruthven Social Center from 10:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Fresh hot mini donuts, snow cones and cold drinks will be offered on Main Street throughout the day, and a turkey filet and brat feed is also planned from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Gowrie Street downtown for the public.
Registration for the Bully Bullhead Car Show will begin at 9 a.m. with the car show starting at noon and continuing to 4 p.m. in the park north of the Pro Cooperative offices. Lineups for the Bully Bullhead parade will begin on Old Highway 18 near Petersen Equipment starting at 12:30 p.m. with the Bully Bullhead Parade beginning at 1:30 p.m.
The Nature Center will be open to the public with a program from 1 to 4 p.m. on Saturday afternoon,
New to the celebration this year will be the Woo Woo Wine fest, from 3 to 7 p.m. in Centennial Park, along with an Antique Tractor Rodeo at 3:30 p.m. at the Care Center. A Bean Bag tournament will take place at the RA Athletic fields starting at 3 p.m. and Pony and wagon rides will be offered on Main Street starting at 3:30 p.m.
From 4 to 6 p.m. the dedication ceremonies and presentation of quilts will be conducted at the Ruthven Social Center and the activities for Saturday close out from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m. with the Ruthven Fire Department's Street Dance with music by the Judd Hoos Band.
Sunday will feature a pancake and sausage breakfast at the American Legion Hall from 7:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., along with a Legion Auxiliary Bake sale.
Worship services will be offered at Sacred Heart Catholic Church at 8:30 a.m., the United Methodist Church at 9 a.m.; Zion Lutheran at 9:30 and Lost Island Lutheran Church at 10:30 a.m.
Trapshooting will begin at 10 a.m. at the Bill Grange farm, and a Co-Ed volleyball tournament starts at noon at Centennial Park. The Bullhead Fishing Contest will close at 1 p.m., while the Swimming Pool will open from 1 to 6 p.m., and the Nature Center will be open from 1 to 4 p.m.
A progressive organ recital will start at Zion Lutheran Church at 1:30 p.m. and the weekend caps off with an Ice Cream Social/Made-Rite supper at the Lost Island Lutheran Church serving from 4 to 7 p.m.
