WHITTEMORE -- A private family memorial service was held for Eileen Gunderson on Sunday, July 20, with Reverend Nicholas Thackery officiating. Inurnment was in the St. Paul Lutheran Cemetery in Whittemore.
Eileen Martha Gunderson was born near Cylinder on Oct. 28, 1928, the daughter of Oley and Martha (Helmke) Gunderson. She was baptized and confirmed at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Whittemore where she remained a member until her death.
She graduated from the Cylinder High School and went on to attend Waldorf College where she earned an Associate of Arts degree and then on to Buena Vista where she earned a Bachelor of Arts degree. Eileen worked as a field representative for the Social Security Administration in Mason City, Mankato and Fairmont, MN.
Eileen retired in 1987 and returned to the family farm near Cylinder. She enjoyed gardening and maintaining the building sites on the farm. In 1996 she moved to Fort Dodge and was an active volunteer, especially at the Villa Care Center and others. She also transported residents to appointments and visited shut in's.
Eileen enjoyed reading several daily newspapers, magazines and she was an avid follower of politics. She was a former member of the Fairmont Business and Professional Women's Club, the National Association of Active and Retired Federal Employees and the Resident Advocate Committee at the Villa.
Eileen died Friday, July 18, 2014, at the Palo Alto County Hospital in Emmetsburg. She was 85.
She is survived by a brother-in-law, Dick Benz of Sibley; sister-in-law, Alice Gunderson of Emmetsburg; nieces and nephews, Steven Benz of Silverdale, Washington; Bonnie Adams of Spillville; Kenneth Benz of Melvin; Rebecca Anthony of West Des Moines; Jay Gunderson of Ringsted; Dean Gunderson of Cylinder; Mark Gunderson of Orange City and many great-nieces and great-nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Donald Gunderson; a sister, Yvonne Benz and a nephew, Neal Gunderson.
Arrangements were handled by Oakcrest Funeral Services of Whittemore.
