Garden of the Month

Emmetsburg News
AUGUST GARDEN -- The Faulstick gardens at 2508 17th Street are featured as the Palo Alto Garden Club Yard of the Month. Sue Faulstick is pictured in one of the beds that is bright with black-eyed Susans, hostas, shrubbery and pink annuals, with treats for the birds.
Sue said she started the flower gardens ten years ago in memory of her brother, Dennis. Flowers have come from the gardens of her mother, Florence Malm, Roger’s mother, Ida Faulstick, and other family and friends.
“We plant what looks good, then move them to different areas and split them,” says Sue. With gardens all around the house, “there is always something to do,” she says.
Perennial beds are sprinkled with annuals for a pop of color. Look around and see day lilies, hosta, cone flowers, Russian sage, salvia, clematis and many other varieties. There are two rain barrels in the yard, used to water the flower beds. And in back, Roger built a potting shed.
The Faulsticks also have a vegetable garden, which is Roger’s project. They grow vegetables for canning and pumpkins for the grandkids. Sharing is what gardening is all about. --Jane Whitmore photo
