Justine “Joan” Berkland 1933-2014

Funeral service for Justine "Joan" Berkland was held Monday, Aug. 18, at Faith Lutheran Church in Spencer. The Rev. Lee Laaveg officiated.

Interment was in Lost Island Lutheran Cemetery, Ruthven. The Martin-Mattice Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Justine "Joan" Berkland, was born Nov. 6, 1933 to Kenneth and Justine (Hartley) Mosher in Mt. Pleasant. She graduated from Iowa State University in 1955 with a degree in Home Economics Education. Following graduation, she married Eugene Berkland on July 24, 1955 at the Salem Congregational Church and moved to Ayrshire where she taught for two years. In 1958 they moved to a farm north of Ruthven. She was the love of Gene's life.

After starting a family, Joan focused her energy to being a homemaker, serving her family, her church and her community. She loved gardening, flowers and welcoming guests into their home.

Joan died Friday, Aug. 15, 2014 at her home near Terril. She was preceded in death by her parents.

She is survived by her husband, Gene Berkland of 59 years; three children, Dan (Loretta) Berkland of Sibley, Lori (Bob) Calkins of East Chain, MN and Curt (Lisa) Berkland of Ruthven; eight grandchildren; her brother, Norval (Esther) Mosher of Marshalltown; her sister, Averil (Carlyle) Merritt of Mason City; several nieces, nephews and cousins.

The family requests that memorials be give to Hospice of North Iowa or the Ostomy Support Group.
