108 BIRTHDAY CELEBRATION -- Loren Greiner of Emmetsburg celebrated his 108th birthday on Wednesday, March 16. Family joined him at Lakeside Lutheran Home, enjoying cake and gifts and plenty of story telling. Pictured are grandson Brendan Greiner (left) and wife Rachel, with 5-month-old Alice; and grandson Aaron Greiner (right) and wife Sarah, with 2-year-old Kathryn. All are from Des Moines.
Loren Greiner worked as a soil scientist with the U.S. Department of Agriculture for 30 years. His grandsons brought Loren birthday greetings from the head of the Chemistry Department at Iowa State University, and from U.S. Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack, thanking Loren for his years of service.
Loren served in the U.S. Army during World War II. At 108, he is the oldest living veteran in the state of Iowa. He is thought to be the third oldest living veteran in the United States. --Jane Whitmore photo
