For Roth and teammate Lucas Hoffman, the tournament started Thursday afternoon in Class 1A with Hoffman meeting Logan Lutgen of Gilbertville Don Bosco in a 126 pound match. Hoffman would come up short in a 6-0 decision loss to the Don Bosco wrestler, dropping him into the consolation wrestleback round later Thursday afternoon.
Hoffman would meet up with Ben Moyer of Alburnett in the wrestleback round, and was unable to get his offense on track as he was eliminated from the tournament in an 8-0 Major Decision loss.
At 132 pounds, Kolton Roth opened his state tournament trek with an 11-2 Major Decision victory over Cory Stewart of Highland of Riverside, earning advancement to the Quarterfinal Round on Friday morning.
For the quarterfinal round on Friday, Roth was paired with Garrett Arment of Woodbury Central. Roth would dominate the match, scoring a 1:04 Win by Fall over Arment to advance into Friday evening's Semi-Final match, where he met Blake Bauer of Southeast Warren.
However, Roth would come up short in the semi-finals, losing a heartbreaking 8-7 decision to Bauer to send the Titan grappler into Saturday morning's Consolation Semi-Finals and Championship round.
For a consolation Semi-final match, Roth would battle Joshua Tibbits of Martensdale St. Mary's through the entire match and came up with a last-second Win by Fall in 5:59 to earn a chance to wrestle for third place at 132 pounds.
For the third place match, Roth would wrestle Cooper Siebrecht of Lisbon, who had defeated Emmetsburg's Spencer Griffin in first-round action on Thursday. Griffin had defeated Roth in the 1A Sectional meet in Mason on Feb. 4, and Roth had gained revenge over Griffin in the 1A District meet on Feb. 11.
But in the Consolation final, Roth would come up short in a 6-4 decision to Siebrecht, giving the Titan wrestler the fourth place finish for the tournament.
