DES?MOINES - The first -ever trip to the State Wrestling Tournament for Juan Falcon didn't quite pan out like he had hoped for. West Bend-Mallard/Gilmore City-Bradgate's first State Qualifier would come up a match short of earning a medal at the 2017 Iowa State Wrestling Championships in Des Moines this past weekend.
Falcon, the Wolverines' 182 pound qualifier, entered first-round action Thursday afternoon at Wells Fargo Arena by meeting Joey Schwenn of Belle Plaine. Falcon and Schwenn would spar through the first period of the match, but Schwenn would catch Falcon early in the second period to pin the Wolverine grappler in 2:42 of the match, sending Falcon into the consolation wrestleback bracket.
Needing to win his next match to stay alive in the tourney, Falcon met Riley Algreen of West Central Valley late Thursday afternoon. The two wrestlers would battle back and forth, with Falcon taking an early advantage and scoring several near-fall points through the three periods on his way to earning a 25-14 Technical Fall over Algreen at the 6:00 mark of the match to advance to Friday morning's 1A Consolation second round.
