Hot Shots Recruiting Night This Wednesday

February 21, 2017
Emmetsburg News

The Emmetsburg HS Hot Shots trap shooting team will hold the 2017 season sign-up, recruitment, and informational meeting for student athletes and parents on Wednesday Feb. 22 in the High School Library at 7 pm.

The Hot Shots trap shooting team is open to Emmetsburg School District students in grades 5-12 and competes under the Scholastic Shooting Sports Foundation's Scholastic Clay Target Program (SCTP). Both boys and girls are welcomed. Student athletes learn the sport of trap shooting, emphasizing gun safety, self-discipline, and teamwork.

All Hot Shots athletes are encouraged to participate in competitions no one "sits on the bench."

Trap squads consisting of five similar-aged athletes each shoot at 25 clay targets in a "round" of trap. Competitions consist of two rounds of trap. Students compete at trap shoots hosted by the Hot Shots or travel to other shooting venues as scheduled, from which athletes accumulate scores that count toward their final year-end placing, culminating with the State Championships June 7-11. Practices will be after school two days a week at Sportsman Recreation Area north of Cylinder starting the week of March 20 and continue throughout the season. Hot Shots athletes are required to adhere to school good-conduct policies and meet academic eligibility standards in order to participate in competitions.

Hot Shots participants are expected to provide their own approved firearm, safety equipment eye and ear protection, and shell bag. Volunteer coaches, certified with DNR, NRA, or 4-H Shooting Sports credentials, will assist in selection and use of the proper fitting and size of firearm and accessories appropriate for each athlete. Practice ammo is additional, but is available and subsidized by the sponsorships and grant awards that minimize the cost.

Some scholarships and open sponsorships are available in order that financial need is not a limiting factor in an athlete's ability to participate.

Registration forms are available at the high school and middle school offices, and will be available at the meeting Feb. 22. Both athlete and parent signatures are required on registration forms.
