A proposal to change the proceeds of a local tax met with defeat Tuesday in Ruthven.

In a special election Tuesday voters in Ruthven narrowly turned down a proposal to change the allocation of a one-percent Local Option Sales and Services Tax. According to unofficial vote totals from the Palo Alto County Auditor's Office, a total of 37 voters cast "no" votes to the proposal, while 30 votes were cast in favor of the question.

The ballot asked voters to authorize a change in the allocation and use of the current one percent Local Option Sales and Services tax for any lawful purpose of the city, rather than the current allocation of Economic development; for the repair, maintenance and construction of streets, sanitary sewer, storm sewers and the Municipal Water Distribution System, and to the Ruthven-Ayrshire School District.
