The traditional start of the St. Patrick's Celebration in Emmetsburg comes this Sunday afternoon with the selection of Miss Shamrock. The annual Miss Shamrock Pageant will take place at 3 p.m. this Sunday, March, 12, at the Emmetsubrg High School Auditorium. Doors will open at 2 p.m. for the event, which will also feature the Junior Miss Shamrock competitions.
Mary Nelson is the 17 -year old daughter of Jim and Diane Nelson of Emmetsburg. She has three siblings: Robert, Maggie and Katie. A junior at Emmetsburg High School, Mary is a member of the A honor roll. She has received an academic letter, and she is a consistent student of the month at EHS.
Mary is a member of the FFA Chapter serving as secretary, and she is the junior class secretary. Mary has participated in cross country, track, vocal, show choir, individual speech and musicals.
Mary helps with Children's Liturgy at Holy Family Catholic Church. She participates in 4-H where she serves on the 4H County Council. She helps with concession stands at school, and takes part in the "Then Feed Just One" food packing program. Her hobbies include: playing piano, painting, drawing, running and reading.
Mary will play a piano solo, "Polonaise in G Minor" for her talent selection.
Emma Stevens is the 17-year old daughter of Doug and Renea Stevens of Estherville. She two siblings: Isabella (12 years old) and Bennett (11 years old). A junior at Estherville Lincoln Central High School, Emma is a TRIO Talent Search member, purple cord recipient, honor roll student and member of honors study hall. She received the team academic award from the Iowa State Dance Team Association. Emma is active in track, volleyball, drill team, dance team, varsity choir and cheerleading. She received a Division 1 rating at the state drill team solo competition. .
In the community, Emma is a member of Trinity Lutheran Church where she helped organize a donation drive and deliver goods to Joplin tornado survivors. She is an assistant dance instructor at L'ecolea Dance in Estherville.
Emma enjoys competing in various dance competitions, and staying active in all of her school activities.
Emma plans to attend Iowa Lakes Community College to receive her Associate Arts Degree, be a member of the Iowa Lakes Dance Team. She plans to attend a four year college after and hopefully go into the medical field.
For the talent portion of the program, Emma will pweform a Jazz Dance to "My Lips Are Moving."
Grace Nelson is the 17-year old daughter of Richard and Andrea Nelson of Ames. She is the oldest of six children. A junior, Grace is homeschooled and dual enrolled with Ames High School. At Ames High, she has received such honors as the Academic Lamp of Knowldege, and is a member of the National Society of High School Scholars.
Grace is very involved with soccer at Ames High School and with the Ames Soccer Club. Her acknowledgements from soccer include: 1st team all-conference, 1st team all-division, 2nd team all-state, offensive MVP, two year letter winner, and for the 2016 season, she finished 2nd in class 3A for goals scored. She has played the piano for 12 years and competed in competitions such as the State Fair Guild. She also enjoys playing the guitar and ukulele.
In the community, Grace is involved in 4-H and has held officer positions for her club. She is also involved in a group called Pure Fashion, which is a faith based program for teen girls. Additionally, Grace is a high school intern at her parish, St. Cecilia's, and she serves as a teen leader for youth
For her talent presentation, Grace will present a piano solo, "BumbleBoogie"
Ali Laubenthal is the 15- year old daughter of Al and Julie Laubenthal of Emmetsburg. She has a brother, Alex. A sophomore at Emmetsburg High School, Ali is on the 4.0 Honor Roll. She has received the Outstanding Academic Excellence Award from the President's Education Awards Program and the National Academy of Future Physicians and Medical Scientists Award of Excellence. Ali is a member of the varsity show choir group "High Voltage," vocal jazz and various small vocal groups. In January, she was selected to attend the Northwest Iowa Honor Choir at Dordt College. She participates in track, softball and dance.
In the community, Ali lectors at Holy Family Catholic Church where she is a lector and assists with children's liturgy on Sunday's. She also volunteers to help with various events at Emmetsburg Catholic School. In addition to her school and community activities, Ali loves spending time with family and friends.
For the talent portion of the program, Ali will sing "Hallelujah."
Alison Merrill is the 17-year old daughter of Gary and Bernadette Merrill of Algona. She has two brothers: Ryan and Joey; grandparents: Bea Poeppe and Frank and Carol Merrill. A junior at Algona High School, Alison has been on the A Honor Roll since 5th grade. She is a member of the talented and gifted program and is currently taking college courses in addition to her high school courses. In addition to her studies, Alison is a cheerleader at Algona High School, and a member of the marching band color guard.
In the community, Alison is a very active member of First Lutheran Church where she is involved in various activities including: K.I.C.K. leader, song leader, bible school teacher, high school youth group, senior and beginning bell choir, praise band vocalist and after school program volunteer. She is a member of the North Central Iowa Choral Directors Honors Choir. She received the Outstanding Actress in a Lead Role award from the Iowa High School Musical Theater Association.
Alison is a part-time on-air announcer at KLGA radio in Algona, and her hobbies include: scrabooking, dancing, singing and listening to music. Her special interests are: researching interesting topics like jobs, colleges, diseases and others.
For her talent selection, Allison will sing "Beautiful Day."
