A Mass of Christian Burial for the Honorable Judge Donald J. Bormann of Emmetsburg was held Monday, March 13, at Holy Family Catholic Church in Emmetsburg. Concelebrants were the Rev. Clem Currans, the Rev. Peter Nguyen, and the Rev. Larry Burns. The Martin-Mattice Funeral Home in Emmetsburg was in charge of arrangements.
Donald Joseph Bormann, son of Gregory and Elizabeth (Burns) Bormann, was born February 25, 1942 in Emmetsburg.
He attended Emmetsburg Catholic School, graduating in 1960. While in high school, Don excelled in athletics and was the quarterback for the football team which was undefeated their Senior year.
Following graduation, Don attended the University of South Dakota in Vermillion, SD, where he received his undergraduate degree. Don then continued his education and attained his Law Degree in 1966.
On Aug. 19, 1961, Don was united in marriage to Ann Brink in Emmetsburg. To this union three children were born.
Don served as a Clerk for a Federal Judge in South Dakota from 1966 until 1967 when he became a Legal Aid Attorney in Rosebud, SD.
In 1968, Don and Ann moved to Emmetsburg where they made their home. From 1968 until 2000 Don practiced Law with Joseph Hanson, Les Pritchard, John Doran, Michael Neary and Tom Magee. In 2000, Don was appointed Associate District Judge for Palo Alto, Kossuth and Emmett Counties in Iowa. He continued with this appointment until 2013 when he served as a voluntary Legal Aid Attorney, working out of John Brown's office.
Don was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church in Emmetsburg. He was a faithful and devoted member of the Horizons Board, serving as President for over 30 years. Don was instrumental in bringing the group homes to Emmetsburg to better serve and improve living standards for mentally challenged individuals.
Don passed away Wednesday, March 8, 2017, at PARC Hall in Emmetsburg, at the age of 75. He was preceded in death by his parents, Greg and Liz Bormann and his beloved sister, Kathleen Bormann.
He is survived by his wife, Ann Bormann of Emmetsburg; his children, Mark Bormann and his wife, Debbie of Newton, Michael Bormann of Los Angeles, CA and Mollie Schlosser and her husband, Greg of Colfax; six grandchildren, Calvin, Camilla, Katie and Kenny Schlosser of Colfax, and Joshua and Justin Kaplan of New Port Beach, CA; sisters, Mary Hartman of Storm Lake, Janet Broderick of Des Moines, Bonnie Guinn of Nevada, and Jean Reed and her husband, Dale of Emmetsburg; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Mary and Bill Leddy of Omaha, NE, Frances and Ben Brink of Rock Rapids, Camilla Brink of San Antonio, TX and Bob Brink of Omaha, NE; several nieces and nephews; as well as many other relatives and friends.
