E-Hawks Prevail Over Warriors, Weather

October 10, 2017
by Dan Voigt , Emmetsburg News

ALTA - An early start to avoid forecasted weather didn't derail Emmetsburg's E-Hawks Friday night in a 20-13 win over Alta-Aurelia. The victory improves Emmetsburg to 4-1 in Class 1A District One and 4-3 overall on the season as the E-Hawks gear up to travel to Hinton this Friday night.

Friday's game started an hour earlier than normal as officials at Alta-Aurelia attempted to beat impending thunderstorms. Field conditions were sloppy from rain throughout the day.

Emmetsburg would get the ball to start the game and drove to the Alta-Aurelia eight-yard line before coming up short and turning the ball over on downs. Alta-Aurelia would go nowhere on their first possession and punted and an exchange of punts and possessions would finish out the firs quarter.

The E-Hawks would have the football to start the second quarter and went with the ground game, grinding out the yardage on the slippery field.

With 7:03 to go in the half, Emmetsburg struck paydirt as Dylan Kibbie found his way into the end zone from one yard out. A two-point try by Connor Joyce came up short, giving the E-Hawks a 6-0 lead.

After the kick, the Warriors began driving downfield, but with 6:44 to go in the half, quarterback Logan McCoy was tackled and the ball popped loose. Emmetsburg's Spencer Griffin jumped on the loose ball at the Warriors' 35 yard line, giving the E-Hawks a great opportunity.

Once again, Emmetsburg started grinding downfield until Connor Joyce launched a bullet towards Blake VerMulm at the eight-yard line. VerMulm reached up with one hand and snagged the ball, pulled it in and raced to the end zone for a 24-yard touchdown strike with 4:54 to go in the half. On the conversion attempt, Joyce handed off to Nick Schany, who bulled his way over the goal line for the two-points and the 14-0 lead.

Alta-Aurelia would get the ball and would work downfield, getting a nice 31-yard reception of their own, only to have a penalty wipe out the play. However, on the resulting play, Emmetsburg would be flagged for penalties on two successive plays.

The Warriors used the penalties to their advantage and with 2:46 to go in the half, scored off a one yard run. The two-point try was stuffed by the E-Hawk defense to make the score 14-6 as Emmetsburg would get the ball back with plenty of time in the half.

The E-Hawks would quickly drive downfield, getting to the Warriors' 25-yard line with less than :30 to play. Connor Joyce fired a pass towards Zach Foxhoven in the end zone, but the pass was intercepted for a touchback to end the first half.

The second half would open with the Warriors getting the ball but eventually turning it over on downs. The E-Hawks would take over and tried to engineer a drive, only to be forced to punt. The Warriors would take over, but would also end up punting the ball just before the end of the quarter.

Holding a 14-6 lead to start the final quarter, Emmetsburg faced a fourth and six at their own 31 yard line and ended up punting.

Alta-Aurelia would go three and out, giving Emmetsburg the ball at their own 17-yard lined. The E-Hawks would start driving downfield once again and with 7:59 to go in the game, Corbin Saathoff made a halfback pass to Foxhoven at the goal line. Alta-Aurelia's Aric Stephan wrestled the ball away from Foxhoven at the one-yard line to kill the drive.

The Warriors would use a half-back pass of their own to gain some breathing room but would turn the ball over on downs with 4:33 to go in the game.

Emmetsburg would start downfield once again and with :40 to go in the game, Dylan Kibbie scored off an 11-yard run. The two-point try failed, giving the E-Hawks a 20-6 lead.

On the resulting kickoff, Alta-Aurelia would benefit from a penalty against the E-Hawks and struck off a 25-yard pass with :17 to play. The conversion kick made the score 20-13 as the E-Hawks readied for the onside kick.

The onside kick would only go one yard and Emmetsburg would run the clock out for the win.

The E-Hawks would end the contest with 293 yards off offense, with 264 rushing yards and 29 passing yards, while Alta-Aurelia had 192 yards off offense with 128 passing yards and 64 rushing yards.

For the E-Hawks, Dylan Kibbie had 28 carries for 160 yards, while Nick Schany added 19 carries for 66 yards. Corbin Saathoff had five rushes for 20 yards and Connor Joyce added six carries for 18 yards. Joyce completed two of six passes for 29 yards with one interception and Saathoff had one pass intercepted.

Blake VerMulm had three catches for 24 yards while Spencer Griffin had a five-yard catch.

On defense, Spencer Griffin had 13 tackles and a fumble recovery, while Jeremiah Weir made eight tackles. Jon Lace II added seven tackles, while Evan Brennan and Ethan Berven both made five tackles each in the winning effort.
