Local District Planning Community Meetings

November 7, 2017
by Dan Voigt , Emmetsburg News

WEST BEND "It just doesn't seem like we talked about this five years ago, but we did and its time to look into it again. With those words, West Bend-Mallard Community School District Superintendent Amanda Schmidt acknowledged that the district is going to be looking at the future of the school building in Mallard.

In 2012, several community meetings were conducted in Mallard and West Bend regarding the future of the Mallard building, which houses the district's Middle School. Elementary and high school classes are located in West Bend, and students are shuttled between the two communities. At that time, the district's Board of Education and administration agreed to monitor student population levels and re-examine the issue in five years time.

Like many rural school districts in Iowa, West Bend-Mallard has seen declining student enrollments and as enrollments decline, so does state school aid funding for the district. Given that scenario, the West Bend-Mallard Board of Education has decided to re-examine the future of the district's Mallard facility.

"Unfortunately, our enrollment numbers seem to be down. Even though we don't finalize those numbers until later in November, we do have parameters that our board has been looking at for the last five years with our Mallard building," Schmidt noted. "Since our enrollment is down, we're going to open up those parameters again, and look at them very carefully to see what our options are for the Mallard building."

Schmidt continued, "As we look at these parameters, the board is going to host a couple of public forums later this month to discuss the issue with the public, and find out their thoughts on the Mallard building."

According to Schmidt, the two public forums have been set for Tuesday, Nov. 14, at 5:30 p.m. in the Mallard building, and then on Monday, Nov. 20, at 5:30 p.m. in the West Bend building.

All patrons of the West Bend-Mallard Community School District are invited to attend either or both of these public forums.
