December 27, 2017
by Dan Voigt , Emmetsburg News

Emmetsburg's Lady E-Hawks and E-Hawks earned a split with Spencer to close out the first half of the basketball season Thursday night. The Lady E-Hawks improved to 5-3 on the year with a 43-34 win over Spencer in the evening's opener.

Emmetsburg jumped out to a 12-6 lead at the end of the first quarter of play, but the offense slowed in the second quarter as they would score just seven points in the quarter as Spencer equalled the tally to give Emmetsburg the 19-13 lead at the half.

Both teams would match each other bucket for bucket in the third quarter as the Lady E-Hawks led 25-19, but in the final quarter Emmetsburg would scored 18 points to secure the nine-point, 43-34 victory over the Tiger girls.

Leading the way in a balanced offensive effort for the Lady E-Hawks was Molly Schany with 11 points, while Lindsay Carter and Abbie Schany would both score nine points each in the contest. Raven Brown added eight ponts, while Gretchen Hofstad tallied four points and Mackenzie King came off the bench to add two points to the winning effort.

Going into the holiday break, the Emmetsburg girls hold a 2-1 mark in the Twin Lakes conference race.

But for the E-Hawk boys, the evening's outcome wouldn't go as well as they were bested by Spencer in a 57-42 final tally. The loss drops the E-Haws to 2-6 overall, with a 1-2 Twin Lakes Conference mark going into the holiday break.

In the boys contest, Spencer and Emmetsburg would struggle to get their offenses on track in the first couple of minutes, but the Tigers would end up taking a 15-12 lead after Emmetsburg finally began to hit just before the end of the first quarter. Spencer would apply a full-court press in the second quarter that would bother the E-Hawks all game long, and took a 36-25 lead over the E-Hawks at the break.

The press continued in the second half, causing numerous steals that the Tigers converted to points for a 46-33 lead to start the final quarter and Emmetsburg could never recover, falling by the 42-57 final tally.

For the E-Hawks, Ben Dunlap came off the bench to lead the effort with 18 points, while Blake VerMulm added 10 points. Corbin Saathoff and Zach Mason both scored four points each, while Hunter McAllister and Tim Geelan each added three points to the final tally.

The Emmetsburg teams will resume action in the new year Friday, January 5, hosting East Sac County.
