E-Hawks Split League Games With East Sac County

January 9, 2018
by Dan Voigt , Emmetsburg News

Emmetsburg's E-Hawk basketball teams resumed play Friday night with a split against East Sac County. The Lady E-Hawks improved to 3-1 in Twin Lakes play with a 39-37 win while the E-Hawk boys fell to 1-3 in the league in a 46-41 loss to the Raiders.

The Lady E-Hawks would take an early 11-8 lead and an 18-12 halftime advantage. In the third quarter, Emmetsburg led by as many as 15 points before taking a 31-18 lead into the final frame, but East Sac mounted a furious rally to try and steal the win away from Emmetsburg, but stingy defense at the end preserved the win for the Lady E-Hawks.

Abbie Schany led the effort with 13 points while Raven Brown added 12 points. Molly Schany scored 10 points, while Gretchen Hofstad and Mackenzie King both scored two points in the effort.

The win improves the Lady E-Hawks to 6-3 overall on the season.

For the E-Hawk boys the battle was tougher as Emmetsburg would get off to a slow start but tied the Raiders 9-9 after one quarter, but only scored three points in the second quarter to trail 17-12 at the half.

The defensive battle would continue in the second half, as Emmetsburg would outscore East Sac County 13-12 in the third frame, but still trailed 29-25 to enter the final quarter of play.

In the final minutes, the defensive battle and cold shooting continued to plague both teams, but with :37 to go in the game, the E-Hawks had cut the deficit to a point, trailing 41-42.

East Sac would get four free throws down the stretch and made them all, however, to eke out the 46-41 win over Emmetsburg.

For the E-Hawks, Ben Dunlap would lead the effort with 12 points while Blake VerMulm added 10 points. Zach Mason tallied eight points, with Tim Geelan adding six points off the bench. Hunter McAllister tallied three points and Clayton Swanson came away with two points to round out the scoring.

The loss drops Emmetsburg to 2-7 overall on the season.

After a Monday contest with West Bend-Mallard/Gilmore City-Bradgate, the E-Hawks are on the road tonight (Tuesday) to Milford for non-conference play against Okoboji's Pioneers.
