by Dan Voigt , Emmetsburg News

Emmetsburg's E-Hawks saw their hardwood season come to a halt last Thursday night in a 56-59 heartbreaking loss to Pocahontas Area. The loss ends Emmetsburg's season with a mark of 8-14 overall.

After falling to the Indians of Pocahontas Area earlier in the season, the E-Hawks came out and matched the Indians bucket for bucket in the first quarter of play, with the score knotted at 13-13 at the end of the first eight minutes of play.

In the second quarter, the Indians had an offensive outburst, as they outscored Emmetsburg 21-12 to jump out to a 34-25 advantage a the half-time break.

But Emmetsburg wasn't about to go away in the second half. The E-Hawks came out and turned the tables on the Indians, using a strong defensive effort to hold Pocahontas Area to just 13 points while the E-Hawks scored 18 points to cut into the lead at 43-47 to start the final quarter of play.

Emmetsburg continued to chip away at the Indians' lead in the final eight minutes of play, outscoring Pocahontas Area 13-12 down the stretch, but missed free throws would spell the difference in the three-point, 56-59 loss to end Emmetsburg's season.

Zach Mason would lead the effort for the E-Hawks with 10 points, while Tim Geelan would come off the bench to also score 10 points. Hunter McAllister added nine points and Blake VerMulm tallied eight points, while Corbin Saathoff and Ben Dunlap both added seven points each. Dylan Kibbie added five points to round out the E-Hawks' offensive effort.
