Are You Addicted to the Internet?

We live in a world of modern convenience. The answers to all of our questions lie at our fingertips. But when is it too much?

According to, "an internet or computer addiction is the excessive use of the former or the latter." There are multiple types of Internet addiction including:

Spending too much time surfing the Internet, so much so that if decreases your work productivity and leads to fewer interactions with friends and family members.

Compulsive Internet use. This type of Internet use is defined by an excess of time spent doing online activities such as gaming, trading stocks, and gambling. This can lead to issues with overspending and problems at work.

A person may turn to the Internet in times of loneliness and depression. This can turn into an addiction quickly as that person begins to rely on the "feel good" things they find on the web. The Internet can turn into a support system the way alcohol, drugs, and gambling can become a support.

So what are the symptoms of Internet addiction? According to, Internet addiction symptoms can be put into two categories: Emotional and physical.

The Emotional Symptoms of an Internet addiction include (

Feelings of guilt




Inability to keep schedules

No sense of time



Avoiding doing work


The physical symptoms of an Internet addiction include (



Weight gain

Weight loss

Sleep disturbances

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

Blurred or strained vision

So what are the implications and complications associated with Internet addiction? Short term, someone who is addicted to the Internet may notice that they are not finishing tasks in a timely manner or at all; the person may be forgetting responsibilities, and changes in weight. In the long-term, there will be more physical implications for Internet addiction. A person may experience lasting backache, neck pain, headaches, and vision issues.

So how do you know if you have an Internet addiction? According to, the Internet Addict Diagnostic Questionnaire is available to any person. It consists of eight questions. If you answer five "yes" then this may be a sign that you have an addiction to the Internet.

Are you preoccupied with using the Internet? Do you think about your past or future online activity?

Do you need to be online longer each time to be satisfied?

Have you made repeated attempts to cut back, stop, or control internet usage without success?

Do you become moody, restless, irritable, or depressed when you stop or decrease your time on the Internet?

Do you spend more time online than you originally intended?

Has your online usage negatively affected a relationship, education, career, or job?

Do you conceal the extent of your Internet use from family, friends, or coworkers?

Does the Internet serve as an escape from problems or relief from a bad mood?

If you answered, "yes" to five or more of these questions, then you may have an addiction to the internet. In order to confirm an addiction, it is best to seek professional help so they can best steer you on the right path recovery.
