Emmetsburg News

Services for Jack Garrelts were held on Saturday, March 10, 2018 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Mallard. Reverend Paul Schulz officiated.

Interment was in Silver Lake Cemetery in Ayrshire. Martin-Mattice Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

John "Jack" Warren Garrelts was born in Ayrshire on Sept. 15, 1937; the son of Henry and Dorothy (Sager) Garrelts. Jack lived his entire life outside of Ayrshire where he farmed and raised cattle. He attended Silver Lake School in Ayrshire where he graduated in 1955.

On Oct. 12, 1958, Jack was united in marriage to Judith "Judy" Clemenson at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Graettinger, Iowa. To this union four children, Mark, Deborah, Julie and Michael, were born.

Jack was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Mallard. He was previously baptized, confirmed and a long-time member of Zion Lutheran Church in Ayrshire. Jack passed away at his home on March 5, 2018, at the age of 80.

Jack's passion for cattle started as a 4-H member where he showed cattle at the county and state fairs. This led him to buy and raise cattle on the family farm of 59 years. Some of his best days were spent attending cattle auctions where he was well known and frequently bought and sold cattle.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Franklin (Joyce) Garrelts; three sisters, Jane (Jim) Thompson, Betty Ann (Bernard) Farrell and Merrylea Clasing; and a grandson, Jacob Faulk.

He is survived by his wife, Judy Garrelts of Ayrshire; his four children, Mark (Vickie) Garrelts of Estherville; Deborah (Bruce) Kolk of Las Vegas, NV; Julie (Jeff) Faulk of Mechanicsville, VA; and Michael (Debbie) Garrelts of Ayrshire; his grandchildren, Kristina (Christopher) Besler, Kelli (Andrew) Hart, Justin Garrelts, Jessica and Jeremy Faulk; great grandchildren, James and Austin Besler; a sister, Judi (Larry) Butterworth of Seeley Lake, MT; several nieces and nephews; as well as many other relatives and friends.
