Shifting Gears

April 5, 2018
Emmetsburg News

For those of you who haven't heard the news, as of this past Monday, yours truly has acquired a new title. I am now the Editor of The Reporter and The Democrat newspapers.

If you'd have walked up to me on the street a year ago and told me I'd be doing this in April, I'd have had a good laugh and called you quite the jokester.

But, as they say, isn't it funny how things change.

It was back in late September or so when the newspaper staff learned that our former editor, Anna Veltri, was expecting her first child. Since the newspaper staff is pretty close-knit, a family of sorts, we were all very happy for Anna and Joe and baby Veltri.

But then, as they say, things change, and in early January, Anna informed us that she had decided to stay home and raise the baby, and wouldn't be returning to work after her maternity leave. Anna set a date of May 1st as her last date of work before starting her maternity leave. However, last week, medical considerations entered into the picture, and Anna left us last Friday.

So, I've had to shift gears on the fly, so to speak - moving from Sports Editor to the Editor's position, but I'm still taking care of sports as well. For now, it's double-duty, but we are looking for a full-time person to join our organization as a reporter/photographer.

In the interim, I'd like to ask all of you for your patience and understanding - it will be a challenge to try and keep abreast of all the things that happen in our communities, and I would ask if you are aware of an event or an activity that would be interesting to our readers, please feel free to call or email me with the information so that we can give coverage in our newspapers.

I can be reached at 712-852-2323, extension 222, or via email at:

The Reporter and The Democrat are community newspapers - all through my nearly 30 years in this industry, I've worked in community newspapers, recording and telling the history of our communities. Growing up in this area and being a lifetime resident, this area is home for me - it always has been and always will be. To me, being able to serve all of you with photos, stories and information is a very important way to support our communities and our residents.

With any change in leadership, there will be some hiccups, or grinding of the gears on occasion, if you will. I will apologize in advance for those instances. The profession of print journalism has been around since the founding of our country. Even with our electronic world, there's still something incredibly satisfying about being able to write a story, take a photograph, and then have them published in a newspaper and be able to hold that newspaper in your hands, knowing you created it.

It is my sincere hope that you will continue to enjoy The Reporter and The Democrat and that we can continue to be your partners in chronicling the story of Palo Alto County and our communities.
