The Great Winter Siege of ‘18

Or, I Hope We Didn’t Miss Spring!

April 10, 2018
By Dan Voigt , Emmetsburg News

I've often used this space at various times to poke fun at weather forecasters and prognosticators, and for that, I?am truly very, very sorry.....So, OK folks at the Weather Bureau, you've made your point. Call off Old Man Winter!

In the past week, I can't begin to count the number of times I've heard the phrase, "I'm so over winter" or words to that effect, and I'm sure most of you have heard them, if not thought them yourselves.

Who isn't over this weather? Here we are, going on the 10th of April, almost three weeks into Spring, and we're still dodging snowballs, slipping on the ice and doing an awful lot of shivvering of late.

The first excuse is going to be Global Warming, of course, because everyone is looking for an excuse or someone to blame for this. Personally, I really don't care who, what or why is the reason for this foolishness. I just want Springtime.

Or did we just flat out miss it?

GASP!

Yes, I?dared to say what lots of folks are thinking. That stretch of really nice weather we had back at the beginning of March, was that our Spring?

There is the old adage about March, In like a lamb, out like a lion, I suppose, but I?think all this is just a bit over the top.

OK, so I'm a realist. If, and I?say if, we did miss Spring, then I'm fully prepared to launch into the Summer routine, get the grill out, and start sitting out on the patio to watch the sunset.

Of course, I'll be the one in the thermal underwear, snow boots, full winter coat, stocking hat, gloves, ear muffs with a large bonfire blazing away for extra heat. Bring on that ice-cold lemonade!
