Opaldine Clausen

Funeral services for 88-year old Opaldine W. Clausen were Thursday, May 3, 2018, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Mallard with Pastor Paul Schultz officiating. Interment was in Rush Lake Cemetery at Curlew, Iowa with the Harris Funeral Services of Mallard in charge of arrangements. Opaldine died Saturday, April 28, 2018 in Mallard, Iowa.

Opaldine Wilhelminia Emma Wojahn was born at home near Emmetsburg, Iowa on March 12, 1930. She was the fifth child of Frederick Wilhem and Louise Charlotte (Brunsheir) Wojahn. She was baptized on March 30, 1930, at the Little Brown Church in Emmetsburg and confirmed on May 14, 1943. Opaldine graduated from Silver Lake Consolidated School in Ayrshire in 1948, attended Buena Vista College and became a Country School Teacher for three years.

On May 22, 1949, she married Antone Robert Clausen and to this union five children were born, Cheryl Charlotte in 1950, Cindra Antonette in 1953, Chaning Wojahn in 1964, Chadney Wojahn in 1966 and Corey Wojahn in 1968. Opaldine worked for Ekstam Howe for twelve years, learning the gift of work. She also worked at M&JR Hakes as a Comptometer. Leaving Laurens, the family lived at Havelock, Curlew and moved to Mallard in 1980. Opaldine then became an Activity Director at Lakeside Lutheran Home in Emmetsburg for 34 years, using her artistic ability at the home.

Opaldine was active in St. Paul's and Trinity Lutheran Churches teaching Sunday School, helping with VBS, holding offices in Ladies Aid and circles of the church. Opaldine was a Garden Club Member in Mallard and Laurens and also attended Lakes Art Center for many years. She was a proud member of the Republican Party. She enjoyed doing crafts, giving programs of Hats and Aprons, painting, refinishing trunks with her husband, telling jokes, playing cards, gardening and flowers. She also had a special love for her grandchildren. Opaldine will be remembered for her paintings, her love and concern to many people in her lifetime.

Survivors include her husband, Antone "Chick" Clausen of Mallard; children, Cheryl (the late Dennis) Vis of Nixa, MO, Cindra (Dan) Mammen of Indianola, IA, Chaning (LaCinda) Clausen of Urbandale, IA, Chadney (Christina) Clausen of Mallard, IA, Corey (Irene) Clausen of Somerset, MA; sisters-in-law, Faye Wojahn of Emmetsburg, IA and Helen Crow of Whittier, CA; grandchildren and great-grandchildren: Charles and Shannon Cox, (Callie, Arie and Charles), Johanna and Michael Wodtke, Jessica and Aron Hassell, Nicolle Vis and Matthew Spurlock (Vera and Ruby), Aaron Mammen (Emma and Ethan), Katie and David Stout, Anna and Nicholas Mechem (August, Crosby and Maren), Timothy Bird and Sandra Villanueva (Theodore), Benjamin Clausen, Max Clausen, Meredith and Stephen Cowperthwait (Anne), Nate Doige, Zachery Doige and Casey Clausen. She was preceded in death by her parents, Fred and Louise Wojahn; brothers, Raymond Wojahn and Willard Wojahn; sisters, Bernadine Bredehoeft and Normadine Bredehoeft; parents-in-law, F.N. (Hap) and Wilhelminia Clausen and brothers and sisters-in-law, Beverly Wojahn, Ed Bredehoeft and Leonard Bredehoeft, Charles Crow, John and Virginia Clausen, Paul and Caroline Clausen and Marie and Carl Wolff.
