A Mallard student has been accepted for admission to Iowa Lakes Community College for the 2018-19 school year.

Austin Bergstrom, son of Martin and Carla Bergstrom of Mallard, has been accepted into the Agriculture Production Technology Program (APTP) at Iowa Lakes Community College for the Fall 2018 semester.

The APTP is divided into three parts: classroom activities; laboratory experience on the college farm; and supervised employment experience in production agriculture. The supervised employment is planned so that the student can be on the home farm or placed on a cooperating farm in the area during the spring planting and fall harvest periods.

Students take part in the management decisions on the farm, including issues with land and livestock. Students learn about and put into practice soil testing, GPS/GIS, fertilizing, tillage, harvesting, marketing, and field records analysis.

In livestock management, students develop and implement practices for swine and cattle production, including selecting, breeding of the livestock as well as utilizing data collection, records analysis and marketing programs.
