Lady E-Hawks Open Softball Season With Victory

Emmetsburg's Lady E-Hawks used a big fifth inning to earn a 7-1 victory over Garner-Hayfield-Ventura in softball action Monday night. The game was the season opener for the Lady E-Hawks.

The Lady E-Hawks got things moving in the second inning. when Mikayla Frerichs doubled on a 3-1 count, scoring one run.

But the fifth inning would be the deciding frame of the contest, as the Lady E-Hawks would push four runs over the plate, using a standing triple by Molly Schany and a base hit from Lindsay Carter to do the damage.

Garner-Hayfield-Ventura would tally one run to avoid the shutout, but the issue would never be in doubt as the Lady E-Hawks earned the season opening win.

Mikayla Frerichs earned the win in the circle for Emmetsburg, going seven inning and allowing just two hits and one run, while earning 12 strikeouts

Offensively, Emmetsburg came up with 11 hits in the contest, with Abbie Schany collecting three hits and Mikalya Frerichs adding two hits. Molly Schany had a triple, while Annie Brenna, Emma Anderson and Ali Laubenthal each had a base hit.

Tuesday night the Lady E-Hawks made the trip to Buffalo Center to take on North Iowa and came away with a 16-0 shutout win over the Bison.

Emmetsburg would get out to an early lead in the contest in their first at-bat, as Abbie Schany doubled to score two runs for the lead they would never relinquish. Three more runs in the second frame and a run in the third put Emmetsburg up 6-0 and in the fifth inning, Emmetsburg added two more runs in the fifth inning for an 8-0 advantage.

In the sixth inning, Emmetsburg collected one more run, but put the game completely out of reach in the top of the seventh, when Mikayla Frerichs, Raven Brown, Abby Berkland, Annie Brennan, Ali Laubenthal, and Bre Madden each drove in runs during the inning to give the Lady E-Hawks the 16-0 lead that would hold for the final victory.

Mikayla Frerichs would pitch three innings and earned six strikeouts while giving up two walks with no hits, while Lindsay Carter would relieve for the final four innings and earned four strikeouts with no hits to collect the save.

Mikayla Frerichs, Abbie Schany and Molly Schany all had three hits in the contest, while Raven Brown, Ali Laubehtnal, and Lindsay Carter all had two hits and Brie Madden and Emma Anderson each had one hit.

Abbie Schany had two doubles, while Raven Brown, Ali Laubenthal and Molly Schany each added a double to the effort.

Emmetsburg will host North Union tonight, Thursday, in a JV-Varsity contest.
