Mother Nature showed her fickle side Thursday night as a thunderstorm would force officials to suspend play for both the Emmetsburg Lady E-Hawks in Emmetsburg, and E-Hawk boys as they played the North Union Warriors at Bancroft. Both varsity games were underway when the weather decided to play a factor.

For the Lady E-Hawks, the contest opened with North Union putting five runners on base in the top of the first, but stranding three due to good defense by the Lady E-Hawks. But Emmetsburg would one runner on base, only to be thrown out stealing to end the inning.

The defense held North Union in check in the top of the second, and in their half of the inning, Emmetsburg got a leadoff single from Annie Brennan, only to leave her languishing at second when the inning ended.

The two teams traded outs in the third inning and in the top of the fourth frame, North Union would lead off with a base hit and saw the runner go to second on an error that put two Warriors on base. The duo would move to scoring positions before Emmetsburg pitcher Mikayla Frerichs induced a pair of big strikeouts after a ground out to end the threat.

The Lady E-Hawks came up in the bottom of the fourth and promptly went down one out off a fly ball, but a single from Molly Schany would be the final action of the contest as it was halted at that point.

In Bancroft, the weather was no kinder to the E-Hawk boys of summer in the historic ballpark. Emmetsburg lead off with a walk for Dylan Kibbie, who was followed on base by Corbin Saathoff. Jeremiah Weir would get on base off a fielders' choice that put Kibbie out on his way to third for the first out.

Hunter McAllister hit into a fielders' choice that put Weir out going to second as Saathoff took third base, but the at-bat ended with Saathoff and McAllister waiting at the corners when Nick Krieg struck out.

North Union would come up to bat, and quickly scored four runs off walks ,an error and a double before the E-Hawk defense could retire the Warriors' ninth batter to trail 4-0 to start the second inning.

Emmetsburg would be retired in order in the top of the second frame, however, as Nick Schany, Ben Dunlap and Lex Kassel all grounded out. But before North Union could take the field, officials stopped the contest for weather and ultimately ended the game.

The season will get into full swing for both boys and girls teams on the diamond after Memorial Day. After hosting West Bend-Mallard/Gilmore City-Bradgate on Tuesday evening, the E-Hawks travel to Wall Lake on Wednesday to play East Sac, and then to Milford on Thursday night to take on Okoboji. Friday, Emmetsburg will entertain St. Mary's.

For the Lady E-Hawks, after entertaining West Bend-Mallard/Gilmore City-Bradgate on Tuesday, Emmetsburg travels to Sac City to play East Sac, and then return home Friday, June 1 to host St. Mary's. On Saturday, June 2, they will travel to Newell-Fonda for their first Saturday tournament action.
