Mother Nature Wins In-County Matchups

May 31, 2018
By Dan Voigt , Emmetsburg News

Mother Nature won again Tuesday night when a fierce thunderstorm descended on Emmetsburg, stopping a softball game between the Lady E-Hawks and West Bend-Mallard Lady Wolverines.

The varsity game started at 5:30 p.m. due to the possibility of impending weather, and the Lady Wolverines quickly got Madison Wickman on base off a walk and Kylie Brosh with a walk, but the duo were stranded. Emmetsburg would get a base hit from Lindsay Carter in the bottom of the first, but she would be thrown out trying to steal second by WBM catcher Anna Ackerman to end the inning.

The Lady Wolverines got a leadoff triple from Mara Clark to start the second inning and Kayla Hoskins drew a walk before the Emmetsburg's defense stopped the threat with the WBM runners at second and third..

Emmetsburg came up in the bottom of the second and drew walks for Annie Brennan and Abbie Schany before Ali Laubenthal sacrificed to score Brennan's run. Mikayla Frerichs, Emma Anderson and Parker Traub would all draw walks, bringing Abbie Schany home before Macy McAllister singled to score Frerichs' run before Lindsay Carter flew out. Molly Schany hit a single to score Emma Anderson and Abbie Schany singled to scored Parker Traub, but the inning ended with Schany waiting as Annie Brennan was put out.

With the sky darkening and the wind beginning to increase, West Bend-Mallard got a leadoff single from Madison Wickman and an error put Callie Clark on base. A single from Kylie Brosh scored Wickman's run, but at that point, the umpires halted play and pulled both teams from the diamond.

Moments later, the full fury of the thunderstorm hit, with gusty winds blowing the wind sideways across the diamond.

Teams scattered along with spectators and the game was called tat that point.

No makeup date has been determined for the contest.
