Emmetsburg News

An exhibition of Art pieces by Karen Ruddy will begin on Saturday June 9th in the Library and will run until Saturday July 14th. An Artists Reception for Karen will be held on Saturday June 9th from 12:30 to 2:30 PM in Conference Room 14 in the Public Library. The Public is invited.

Karen Jackson Ruddy graduated from Emmetsburg Catholic High School, earned a BA in Art and Education from Doane College, Crete, Nebraska, and earned a Master's and Ph.D. in Library & Information Science from TWU, Denton, Texas. She taught K-12 Art in the public schools. During these years she produced large works of art and was featured in one-woman shows at Nebraska Wesleyan University and the Haymarket Gallery, both located in Lincoln. Many of her art pieces are in private collections throughout Nebraska, Iowa, and Texas.

After spending thirty-three years of administrative work as a College Library Director and Adjunct Professor for Texas University, she retired in 2004 and moved home to Emmetsburg with husband Victor "and returned to my first love creation of Art in all its forms."

Her work is influenced by the Italian mosaics of the Byzantine period especially the Madonna and Child images. Realistic and abstract themes are found throughout her mosaics with the beauty of the images appearing to the observer after close study and admiration.

Karen said that she "relishes this freedom of design which allows me to identify forms and figures that I would not initially "draw" if the lines and spaces did not dictate the final image to me."

"In recent years, I tend to work more in the abstract, allowing myself the luxury of wide flowing lines that finish in some form of bird image that mirrors the freedom of my imagination."

As a member of the Artisan Road Trip artist group in Northwest Iowa, Karen shows at a number of galleries in this area of Iowa and has pieces in the sales gallery of Arts on Grand in Spencer, Iowa.
