Ted Riley Named E-Hawk Booster Of The Year

June 7, 2018
By Dan Voigt , Emmetsburg News

The Emmetsburg E-Hawk Athletic Booster Club is hosting the Eighth Annual Golf Outing next Friday, June 15, at the Five Island Golf Course in Emmetsburg. The event gets underway with registration and lunch from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and a shotgun start at 1 p.m.

This year, the E-Hawk Athletic Booster Club has partnered with the Five Island Golf Course Board to direct the proceeds from the golf outing towards the Golf Board's project of rebuilding the practice green at the course.

When The Shores at Five Island was constructed, contractors parked equipment on the existing practice green, rendering it unuseable once The Shores construction was finished.

For three seasons, there has been no official practice putting green at the course, which does not allow Five Island to host post-season tournament events for the Iowa High School Athletic Association.

"When we started talking about rebuilding the practice green, one of the reasons was to allow the course to host those post-season events, which would bring added people to the course and our community,"?noted Golf Board President Ben Hofstad. "We applied for a Gaming Grant and were awarded half of the cost to rebuild the green. We've raised half of our match, and with this partnership with the E-Hawk Athletic Booster Club, we are hopeful we will be able to complete the funding and begin work on the restoration later this year."

With a partnership in hand, the Emmetsburg E-Hawk Athletic Booster Club named long-time Emmetsburg girls golf Coach Ted Riley as the E-Hawk Booster of the Year

Ted Riley is a native of Ringsted, Iowa and a 1976 graduate of Ringsted High School where he was a multi-sport athlete. He loves telling his Great Dane friends that the Greatest Dane was an Irishman. Ted received his BA from Buena Vista College and his MA from Southwest Minnesota State University.

Ted and his wife, Lori, moved to Emmetsburg in 1983 after teaching and coaching three years at Remsen-Union. "Emmetsburg became home and was a great place to raise and educate our three children, Matt, Katie and Marc. When other opportunities presented themselves the grass always looked greener here in Emmetsburg."

During his 31 years at Emmetsburg Mr. Riley primarily taught middle school math and some discipline; his coaching duties included Varsity Girls Basketball, Varsity Girls Golf, Assistant Varsity Softball, and Middle School Girls Track. Coach Riley's basketball teams won multiple Lakes Conference Championships and qualified for 5 state tournaments along with a State Championship in 1991. Coach Riley received Lakes Conference Coach of the Year. He was inducted into the Iowa Basketball Coaches Hall of Fame in 2007. This past St. Patrick's Day celebration may have been the climax of Coach Riley's career as he, his championship team, and all his alumni players were honored for their dedication to the Lady E-Hawk Basketball program by the current 2017-2108 team.

Coach Riley's Golf teams don't have to take a backseat to anyone as they have won multiple Lakes Conference Championships and qualified for 7 of the last 10 state tournaments with Runner-up finishes in 2015 and 2017. Coach Riley was 2-A Coach of the Year by the Iowa Golf Coaches Association in 2015 and nominated for Iowa's representative for the National Coach of the Year for Girls Golf in 2018.

"The Five Island Golf Board is very thankful for the support and partnership with the E-Hawk Athletic Booster Club for this event,"?Hofstad noted. "We're assisting in selling tee sponsorships, and working to bring extra value to this facility, and we hope to be able to continue our partnership with the Booster Club in the future. We hope to see everyone out on the course next Friday for a great round of golf for a fantastic cause."

Coach Riley is still active in the Emmetsburg School District as Varsity Girls Golf Coach, middle school basketball coach, substitute teacher, and bus driver.

Coach Riley believes "I'm confident there is no one single thing that leads to success in any given endeavor, but surrounding yourself with great people is certainly a great place to start. For me that would be my family, assistant coaches at all levels, volunteer coaches, players, parents, administration and certainly this Booster Club as our athletes are rewarded for the their efforts by receiving the best state of the art equipment available to them. This year in particular Coach Bjustrom and I would personally like to thank the Booster Club for their commitment towards a new practice green at Five Island Golf Course."

"For all of us living in Emmetsburg today, I know the best investment that any of us can make is in the future. As we just finished one school year and look forward to starting another, I encourage everyone to continue to support the E-Hawk tradition. Go E-Hawks!"
