Relay for Life fights the good fight against cancer

There is always someone fighting the brave battle against cancer because, unfortunately, cancer has touched everyone's life in some way. Maybe it was a family member, a friend, a teacher or maybe it was a stranger met on the street; but someone you have come in contact with has battled cancer. It may not have been a personal battle but it was dealt with head on with honor, courage and bravery that is second only to the men and women of our armed forces.

This year the 2018 Relay For Life Event will take place on Friday, June 15 at Soper Park in Emmetsburg from 5 to 10 p.m. MOJO Productions will provide music throughout the event beginning at 5:00 p.m. Other events beginning at 5:00 p.m. are County Wide Performances and Kids Activities 5:00 to 6:00 pm, Face Painting by the Emmetsburg Drill Team 5:00 to 7:00 pm and also at 5:00 pm Supper Begins a pork loin by the Southside Grillers.

The Opening Ceremonies and Annual Activities begin at 6:00 p.m. with the Opening Prayer by Deb Walsh, the National Anthem sung by Teresa Alesch followed by the Color Guard from the VFW. Next will be the survivor lap, which will be led by the 2018 Team of Hope of Jon and Reba Williams and followed by the Caregiver Lap.

At 7 p.m., there will be a Treasure Hunt, at 7:30 p.m. a Frozen T-shirt Contest and at 8 p.m. Bingo in the Bath House with Karaoke throughout the events.

Winners of the Raffle, Silent Auction and 50/50 Raffle will be announced at 9 p.m. Items being raffled off this year include a one-year membership to the Smith Wellness Center, a fire pit from Swanson Hardware, a Quilt from Classic Quilters, one Cubs ticket and a six-foot aluminum picnic table from Aluma.

At 9:30 will be the Luminary Lighting followed by the Closing Ceremonies at 9:45 p.m. Throughout the evenings activities, you will find booths that are sponsored by 2018 Relay Teams. JLB Fishing will have Sugar Cookies, Hunting for a Cure will have Nachos, Sock it to Cancer will have watermelon and finally Burns Chiropractic will be having a dunk tank featuring City and County Law Enforcement and selling T-shirts. Other teams for this evenings events include Team Office, Team Tonderum, Cure Crusaders, PACH Educating for a Cause and Iowa Trust.

The cause is important, so come and enjoy the evening which is being sponsored by Iowa Lakes Electric Cooperative, Hughes Pharmacy, Iowa Trust & Savings Bank, Palo Alto County Health System, Building Centers of Emmetsburg & Estherville, Hagen Ag, POET, The Financial Center, Mehan Auction, Corn Belt Cooperative, Emmetsburg Municipal, Farmers Mutual Insurance, Faulstick Construction, Jamison Equipment, King Excavating, McNally Abstract, Northland Auto & Marine and Pizza Ranch.
