POCAHONTAS -- James Robert Perry, 92, passed away at home on Saturday, June 9, 2018 in Pocahontas.

Funeral service for Mr. Perry was held Wednesday, June 13, at the St. Peter Lutheran Church in Pocahontas. Pastor Elton Jorde officiated.

Burial was at Rush Lake Cemetery near Curlew with military rites conducted by members the American Legion, AMVETS and VFW.

The son of Cyrus Blair Perry Jr. and Hazel (Peterson) Perry, he was born May 14, 1926 on a farm west of Havelock. He grew up a farm kid with his siblings, Howard, Russell, Tom, Don and Lola. He attended country school through eighth grade, and went on to graduate from Mallard High School in 1943.

After graduation, Jim was drafted into service in the US Navy during World War II, where he served on the aircraft carrier USS Petrof Bay in the Pacific.

After the war, he was honorably discharged and returned home to Mallard and married his high school sweetheart, Eileen (Cross) Perry on June 8, 1947, at the United Methodist Church in Mallard.

Jim and Eileen settled on their farm in the Havelock area, where they would raise three children: Kaye, Randal, and Annette. Jim was active in the community, including the United Methodist Church, Spring Hills Country Club, American Legion and AMVETS. He was also a Mason. Jim and Eileen loved entertaining friends, dancing at the Ridotto Ballroom, golfing and playing cards.

On July 10, 1977, Jim lost Eileen after a long battle with ovarian cancer. He went on to marry Joan (Schmidt) DeWall in 1980, and they continued to live on the farm until 1992, when he retired and moved to Pocahontas.

In their retirement, Jim and Joan loved to play cards, golf, socialize with their family and friends, and travel, including to many annual Navy reunions of the USS Petrof Bay crew. He was admired for his quick wit, charming personality and kind nature.

A gentleman until the end, he was loved by many, and will be greatly missed by his wife of over 38 years, Joan Perry of Pocahontas; children Kaye (Willie Pico) Perry of Emmetsburg, Randy Perry of Emmetsburg, and Annette (Joe) Hiscocks of Britt; stepchildren Dan (Laura) DeWall; Dave (Laurie) DeWall; Jane (Rod) Stoulil, all of Pocahontas; grandchildren: Kris, Amy, Carrie, Brent, Tracy, Kal, Ebony, Erin, Cody, Niki, Heather, Megan, and Sarah; 14 great-grandchildren; and many other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Cyrus and Hazel; brothers Howard, Russell, Thomas, Donald and infant William; sister Lola Zuercher; and wife Eileen.
