The Cornbelt Chorus Barbershop chorus, based in Algona, announces a new director for the group. Luke Miller, former Vocal Music director at Ruthven-Ayrshire and Emmetsburg, recently assumed the directorship of the chorus.

In an effort to re-kindle interest in the organization, the Cornbelt Chorus will be conducting rehearsals the second and fourth Wednesdays of each month, beginning July 11, in the Emmetsburg High School Vocal Music Room. Rehearsals will begin at 7:30 p.m. Rehearsals are the first and third Wednesdays of the month in Algona at the First United Methodist Church.

The Cornbelt Chorus has been a long-time fixture in the region, with numerous local residents participating over the years in the group, which sings four-part harmonies. Every year, the group produces a show featuring a guest quartet of national stature along with other groups, and for the past several years, the Chorus has presented a show in Emmetsburg in the High School Auditorium.

Over time, as members have stepped back, the chorus is now looking to recruit new members, and to welcome members who have left to rejoin the group.

I've always enjoyed Barbershop singing" noted Luke Miller, who is currently the director of Vocal Music at Spirit Lake High School. "In coming back to the Cornbelt Chorus, I'm very happy that several former members in the Emmetsburg area have told me they're going to re-join the chorus, and I've had some current and former high school students indicate they're going to join as well. The chorus is a great way to meet new people and enjoy the fellowship of Barbershop singing."

Miller noted that the incoming high school vocal director at Emmetsburg, Trent Teske, is also going to join the group.

"Anyone who would like to learn more about Barbershop singing is welcome to come and join us on July 11 in the Emmetsburg High School Vocal Room," Miller said. "All ages from high school on up are invited to join us."
