Emmetsburg News

A Mass of Christian Burial for Rose McFarland was conducted Wednesday, July 11, at Holy Family Catholic Church in Emmetsburg. Concelebrants were Rev. Bill Schreiber and Rev. Clem Currans. Interment was in St. John's Catholic Cemetery in Emmetsburg. The Martin-Mattice Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements. Rose died Sunday, July 8, 2018, in Emmetsburg at the age of 94.

Rose Margaret (O'Connor) McFarland, daughter of Maurice and Ella (McNamara) O'Connor, was born August 24, 1923 in Emmetsburg, Iowa. She received her education at St. Mary's Academy in Emmetsburg. Rose knew what it was to work. As a child, she delivered milk by sled in the winters, learned to drive truck and during her high school years worked at the Candy Kitchen.

Following high school, Rose moved to Omaha where she worked at various jobs, later taking a manager's position at the Beaton's Drug Store. While living in Omaha, Rose met her future husband, Alfred McFarland. They were united in marriage on June 7, 1947 in Omaha, Nebraska. They were blessed with a daughter, Rose Marie.

Al and Rose moved to Emmetsburg where they purchased the Redwood Caf in 1952. Rose owned and operated the restaurant until her retirement in 1996. Dining at the Redwood was like joining family for a meal. Rose greeted each and every customer that walked through the door, made sure your food met your expectations, and often would sit down at your booth to chat for a minute. She enjoyed having her daughter and son-in-law, Rose and Dave, join her at the restaurant for meals.

Rose not only served the public through her caf, but she gave to those in need throughout her entire life, whether that was food, her time or her gifts. These gestures often went untold, as Rose was a private individual who wanted no recognition for herself. Rose's kindness and work ethic will be a legacy left to all of those who knew her. She loved spending time with Rose, Dave and their dog Jack.

Rose passed away Sunday, July 8, 2018 at Lakeside Lutheran Home in Emmetsburg, Iowa, at the age of 94. She was preceded in death by her parents, Maurice and Ella; her husband, Alfred; son-in-law, Dave Reit; and brothers, Monty and Edward O'Connor.

She is survived by her daughter, Rose Reit, a very dear friend, Dave Alig and a sister-in-law, Mary McFarland of Omaha, Nebraska; nieces and nephews; as well as countless friends
