Lady E-Hawks’ Season Ends In Regional Semi Final

The post season came to a heartbreaking close Friday night for Emmetsburg's Lady E-Hawks in a 5-1 loss to St. Ansgar. The loss closes Emmetsburg's season on the diamond with a 9-2 mark in the Twin Lakes Conference and 24-8 on the season. As the season ends, the Lady E-Hawks also bid farewell to senior players Emma Anderson and Parker Traub.

The game opened with St. Ansgar drawing a leadoff walk, but the runner would be left waiting at first when the Lady E-Hawks made the defensive stop. Emmetsburg would come up in the bottom of the first frame and went down two outs right away, but Annie Brennan smacked a base hit. Courtesy runner Cheyanne Fries would steal second and made it to third base off an error on the pick off attempt, but she was left waiting when the inning ended.

The Saints went down one out in the top of the second and then got a base hit to put a runner on first. A strikeout followed before a walk was issued to give St. Ansgar runners at first and second with two out, but Emmetsburg's Mikayla Frerichs induced a strikeout to end the at-bat. But in the bottom of the second, the Lady E-Hawks would be retired in order to end the inning in a scoreless deadlock.

In the top of the third, St. Ansgar found an offensive spark. An error put the leadoff batter on base before a home run shot would score two runs for the Saints. A batter was hit by a pitch to gain base before the first two outs ere recorded. A base hit would allow the runner to come home, but one runner would be left waiting when

the at-bat ended.

Now trailing 3-0, Emmetsburg would once again be retired in order as the offense struggled to end the third inning.

The Saints would get a base hit with one out, but stranded their runner in the top of the fourth, but as Emmetsburg came up to bat, the offense found some life. Ali Laubenthal led off with a base hit and stole second. A throwing error allowed her to move to third, before she came home off a sacrifice by Emma Anderson before the at-bat ended.

With the score now standing at 3-1 to start the fifth inning, St. Ansgar would get a runner on base off a base hit, but left her waiting for a way home. Emmetsburg would get Abbie Schany on base off an error, and she stole second and went to third off a fly ball from Mikayla Frerichs, but Schany would be left looking at home plate when the inning ended with the Lady E-Hawks trailing 3-1.

In the top of the sixth, the Saints got a leadoff single that was followed by a walk, but a base hit would follow after a pick off for an out. With runners at second and third after a pair of stolen bases, a double would score the two runs before Emmetsburg made the final two outs to strand the runner to end the at-bat.

Now trailing 5-1, the Lady E-Hawks would go down two outs, but Annie Brennan rapped out a base hit to keep the hopes alive. Courtesy runner Cheyanne Fries came in but would be left at first on a fly ball to end the inning.

St. Ansgar would open the seventh inning with a ground out, but drew a walk before a strikeout, but a single would put the runners on second and third before Emmetsburg ended the opportunity with a line drive catch by Ali Laubenthal. The Lady E-Hawks got Molly Schany on base off an error, but she would be left at first base as Emmetsburg would be retired in order in the next three batters to end the game and the season in the 5-1 setback.

Mikayla Frerichs would go the distance in the circle, giving up five runs, three earned, off nine hits with three walks and six strikeouts.

For Emmetsburg, Annie Brennan would come away with two hits and Ali Laubenthal had a single as well.
