On Sunday, United Methodist Church officially broke ground for its Family Life Center.

The ceremony took place after morning services. Pastor Hojin Shin and members of the building committee sunk their spades and turned over dirt in the church-owned lot across the street from the church.

Jodi Ward, Kent Klootwyk, Ted Ellis, Tony Salas, Dave Fog and Bill Harris comprise the committee. According to Klootwyk, plans for the center have been in the works for many years.

"This has been on the agenda for about 10 years," said Klootwyk. "Our current facilities are not large enough to accommodate all of the church's activities."

According to the building proposal on the church's website, the center would serve as a multipurpose building.

The church selected Morton Building Systems to provide the building. The committee provided Morton $45,600 in initial funding to begin the building's design.

The center's total estimated cost is $866,904. Minus the $45,600 for the design cost, the church would provide financing through the church's building account funds, endowments and a bank loan.
