The Board of Education of Emmetsburg Community School District met in a work session on October 4, 2018 .in the Conference Room. Roll call was taken at 7:30 am. Present were Jane Hoyman, Scott Kibbie, Kathy Roethler, Dan Chism and Ed Meyer. Also present were Amanda Schmidt, Lisa Chapman and Trent Grundmeyer.

Trent Grundmeyer began the session by reviewing the agenda for the work session. The topics today included the proposed timeline, the stakeholder survey and compensation package. The tentative timeline was decided as follows:

October 8 - 21: Post Survey for stakeholders to complete;

Nov. 1-Dec 2: Application Period;

December 6, 5:30pm: Closed Session Board Meeting to choose candidates & chart next steps;

December 14, 8:30am: Electronic Screening of Candidates;

January 8, 1:00pm: Formal Interviews; and

January 8, 5:30pm: Board Meeting to choose candidate (closed), open meeting to offer position, if applicable, the date of the formal interviews.

Mrs. Schmidt will be giving district tours to candidates. Community tours will also be given by appropriate persons. Packets containing information about the county, community and district will be given to interviewees, including housing information.

Grundmeyer reviewed the survey that had already been sent out to the public. He felt the common themes of the results were climate/customer service, academics, sharing, student involvement and open communication and transparency. Grundmeyer had sent a new survey to the board. Those survey questions were reviewed. The board did not have any new questions or changes to those that Grundmeyer proposed.

The new survey will be updated with correct dates by Grundmeyer and returned to Mrs. Schmidt. The new survey will be available October 8-21. The survey will be pushed out to the public via social media (Twitter, Facebook), the website, email from the student information system JMC and will be noted in the newspaper. Once Grundmeyer receives the results of the second survey we will compare with the first survey to find the characteristics that are needed in a leader of the Emmetsburg School District.

Finally, the board reviewed comparable salaries for superintendents of similar sized districts, some area salaries as well as the current wages paid for Mrs. Schmidt. Information obtained from Iowa Association of School Boards was outdated and the most recent salary information is not posted. The board discussed salary ranges and compensation packages to offer. Grundmeyer told the board that the top three (3) things that make an offer attractive are a multi-year contract, family health insurance and evaluation and feedback goals spelled out.

The board will receive a weekly email from Grundmeyer on the applicants as they come in. Grundmeyer Leaders has already posted the position online with the companies that the search firm works with. Additional postings on TeachIowa and any board chosen outlet will be posted November 1.

The next work session will be to review the stakeholder survey report and decide the characteristics needed for an Emmetsburg school superintendent.

The work session ended at 8:30am.
