Marion "Bette" Miller

Funeral services for Marion "Bette" Miller of Emmetsburg will be held Saturday, Oct. 20, 2018 at 1:30 p.m. at the First United Methodist Church in Emmetsburg. Rev. Hojin Shin presiding.

Visitation will be Friday, Oct. 19, from 4 to 8 p.m. at the Martin-Mattice Funeral Home in Emmetsburg.

Interment will be at Valley View Cemetery in Graettinger. Martin-Mattice Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Marion Yvette Miller, daughter of John and Ruby (Strain) McDonald, was born on her family's farm near Ames. She received her education in country school and graduated from Graettinger High School in 1944. At an early age, Marion became known to her family and friends as Bette.

On Dec. 27, 1946, Bette was united in marriage to LeRoy Miller at the United Methodist Church in Graettinger. To this union four children were born.

Bette was employed as a phone operator for Northwestern Bell and later helped with Emmetsburg Cement Block Company and Miller Construction. She also worked at Joyce's Foodland and was a cook for the Emmetsburg Community School.

Bette was a member of the First United Methodist Church and United Methodist Women, in Emmetsburg. She was also a member of the Pythian Sisters and the Robert Emmet Society. Bette enjoyed her sewing club as well as playing Bridge and 500 with her family and friends.

Bette and LeRoy had a cabin on the lake where their family enjoyed many fun times. Bette was an avid swimmer and taught Red Cross swimming lessons for several years. She was a big supporter of the Emmetsburg Pool and had been very active in organizing UNICEF in the area. In her younger years, Bette enjoyed bowling.

Bette passed away Thursday, Oct. 4, 2018, at the Emmetsburg Care Center in Emmetsburg, at the age of 92. She was preceded in death by her husband, LeRoy; parents; great grandchild, Nevaeh Brown; and siblings, Evelyn, John, Leonard, Virginia, Todd, Patsy, LaVonne, David, Gene and Joan.

She is survived by her children, Doug (Margaret) Miller of Emmetsburg, Susan (Ted) Hovda of Garner, Carol (Dan) Brown of Mason City and Beth (Michael) Molloy of Minneapolis, MN; two student exchange daughters, Rocio Castro Hernandez and Illeana Torres; ten grandchildren, Maria (Steve) Nelson, Chad (Carolyn) Miller, Jamie (Maggie) Hovda, Lee (Katie) Hovda, Margaux Hovda, Matt Brown, Carly Brown, Connor Molloy, Kelly Molloy and Mitchell Molloy; great grandchildren, Kilee, Kiera, Lucy, Annaliese, Brody, Theo, Atlantis, Nakia, Nikyra, Niraeh and Evelyn; sisters, Jane Johnson of Tiggard, OR, Kathryn Mammen of Nevada, Joy (Vince) Heller of Graettinger; several nieces and nephews; as well as many other relatives and friends.
