Emmetsburg News

Memorial Services were held on Tuesday, Jan. 1, 2019, for Richard L. Baxter, Sr. at the Martin- Mattice Funeral Home in Emmetsburg.

Martin-Mattice Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Richard Leo Baxter, Sr., son of Cecil and Marie (Conlon) Baxter, was born February 18, 1939 in Ayrshire. He received his education in Ayrshire, graduating from Ayrshire High School in 1957.

Dick later attended Iowa Lake Community College where he received his Accounting Degree in 1968 and went on to earn his B.A.I. Auditing Degree from the University of Wisconsin.

On September 14, 1958, Dick was united in marriage to Sandra Mae Bull at the United Methodist Church in Ayrshire. To this union six children were born.

Dick was employed at Graves grain elevator in Maple Hill for a few years before accepting a position at Iowa Trust and Savings Bank in Emmetsburg.

Dick then became an auditor and later Vice President of Toy National Bank in Sioux City. He then was employed as Executive Vice President of Siouxland National Bank in South Sioux City, Nebraska and later became President/C.E.O. of the State Bank of Ledyard in Ledyard.

Dick was a Certified Public Accountant and Certified Bank Auditor. He was a member of the Iowa Bankers Association and the N.S.C.B.A. and I.C. Men's Club.

Dick was a very humble man and well respected in all of the communities he lived in. He was a devoted husband to his wife of sixty years and always held her hand when they were out. Dick and Sandra loved to dance.

He loved his family very much and looked forward to the time he could spend with them. Dick was proud of his family and the Baxter name.

He taught his children the importance of compassion, strength and unconditional love. He also taught all of his kids the "other" set of basketball rules on the home court. He will certainly be remembered as a great prankster to all who knew him. Dick was an avid Iowa Hawkeye fan.

Dick passed away Saturday, December 29, 2018, at his home in Emmetsburg, at the age of 79. He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Harvey Baxter; and a sister, Elizabeth "Betty" Janssen.
