Funeral service for Paul R. Jones of Emmetsburg was held Saturday, Jan. 26, at the Martin-Mattice Funeral Home in Emmetsburg. The Rev. Bill Schreiber, pastor of Holy Family Catholic Church in Emmetsburg, officiated.

Interment was in St. John's Catholic Cemetery, Emmetsburg. Military rites were conducted by members of V.F.W. Post #2295. The Martin-Mattice Funeral Home in Emmetsburg was in charge of arrangements.

Paul Raymond Jones, son of Charles Lyman and Margaret Lenora "Ora" (Bough) Jones, was born Aug. 27, 1924 in Laurens. As a young child, Paul's family moved to Emmetsburg where he attended grade school at Emmetsburg Catholic School. Paul completed his education at St. Mary's Academy.

Following high school he worked in Chicago and while living there, Paul received a letter saying, "Uncle Sam wants you!" He joined the United States Navy, being inducted on Sept. 28, 1943, serving during World War II. Paul was stationed aboard the U.S.S. Robinson Destroyer in the South Pacific. Paul was honored to attend the wedding of his division officer, Admiral Elmo Zumwalt, Chief of Naval Operations, while in China. Paul was very proud of his military service and his part in the Philippines Liberation Campaign. He was honorably discharged on March 8, 1946.

After returning from the service, Paul farmed for several years and was then employed by the State of Iowa, becoming manager of the State Liquor Store.

On Sept. 11, 1950, Paul was united in marriage to C. Jeanne Behrendsen at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Ruthven. To this union four children were born.

After 38 years of State employment, Paul retired. He and Jeanne enjoyed being "snowbirds" in Florida and Arizona for over 25 years. They had the opportunity to visit 48 states. Paul always looked forward to attending many ship reunions and getting reacquainted with his fellow WWII ship mates. Paul and Jeanne loved playing golf and were members of the Emmetsburg Country Club. Paul was never one to sit still very long and was always able to find something to do for himself or for others. He always had a large garden and canned anything he was able to grow. He earned his Private Pilot's License and had the joy of flying for many years.

Paul was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church in Emmetsburg. He was also a member of the Jaycee's group when it was active, V.F.W. Post #2295 and St. Pat's Association.

Paul loved to visit with people, whether he was talking about his service years, his adventures of flying with his buddies or telling you about his grandchildren. He was also a good listener, always interested in what was going on in your life as well. His contagious smile and sense of humor will certainly be remembered by all who knew him.

Paul passed away Tuesday, Jan. 22, 2019, at the age of 94. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Robin Jeanne Jones; his parents; two brothers, Joe and Leo Jones; an infant brother; a sister, Mary Farrell; four nieces; one nephew; nine brothers-in-law; and seven sisters-in-law.

He is survived by his wife, C. Jeanne Jones of Emmetsburg; his children, Danna (Al) Nall of Casa Grande, AZ, Paul Jones of Iowa City, and Pat (Ron) Kelly of Urbandale; nine grandchildren; nine great grandchildren; brother-in-law, Jim Farrell of Mulberry, FL; sister-in-law, Bette Miller of Spirit Lake; 14 nieces and nephews; as well as many other relatives and friends.
