Elected Officials Hold First Townhall Meeting of Year

The first town hall meeting of the year was held on Saturday, Feb. 5 with local members of the community between Representative Megan Jones and Senator Zach Whiting. Topics ranged from money allocated to community colleges to hog confinements.

Opening the meeting Jones discussed the first two week of being in session.

"The first week is mainly ceremonies and getting settled," Jones. "The second week is when the work really starts."

Whiting is considered a Freshman Senator having been newly elected in November, he still getting his feet wet so to speak.

"The Legislative Service Agency just came out with their estimates for people funding," Val Newhouse, President of Iowa Lakes Community College began. "even though we had an increase in funding , overall our per people funding dropped by $100 statewide while the private colleges increased by about $600."

"We are just starting to piece together context when it comes to the budget and setting SSA funding," Jones replied. " the Supplemental State funding must be set within 30 days of the Governor's Condition of the State address.
