Chamber To Honor Residents At Annual Awards Banquet

John Hand Named Citizen of the Year

Emmetsburg Chamber of Commerce will honor residents of the community at the Annual Banquet and Awards Celebration. The event is Monday, Feb. 18, at The Shores at Five Island with the theme "Planting the Seeds of the Future."

John Hand of Emmetsburg will be recognized as Emmetsburg's Citizen of the Year. The Chamber will also present the MidAmerican Energy Catalyst of the Year Award, and recognize 5 Under 40, along with presentation of Chamber Volunteer Awards.

Citizen of the Year

John Hand was nominated for Citizen of the Year "for his devotion to the community and the many people whose lives he has touched." Hand was nominated by Brett Antczak, Administrator at Palo Alto County Health System.

In his letter of nomination, Antczak stated, "John has long been a fixture in the Emmetsburg community." He recognized Hand's work in the financial industry, working with countless families over the years as the community grew.

For the past 15 years, John Hand has been Director of the Palo Alto County Hospital Foundation. He has played a crucial role in the continued growth of health care for Palo Alto County. John, and his wife, Ruth, deliver Meals-on-Wheels to local residents three days a week.

Awards Celebration

A number of residents will be recognized at the Chamber Awards Celebration.

The MidAmerican Energy Catalyst of the Year Award will be presented to Kelly Bay, Katy Thomsen and Brook Hayenga with Five Island Life. This innovative group has hosted the Wine Walk and will present Cool Fest this month.

The Catalyst Award is presented to a business for their inspiration, charity and wisdom.

5 Under 40 recognition will be presented to Jason Bauer, owner/operator of Bauer Plumbing of Emmetsburg; Tiffany Elbert from Iowa Trust & Savings Bank; Scott Higgins, owner/operator of Prime Time Fitness; Michelle Theesfeld, for her work with Emmetsburg soccer and Every 15 Minutes; and Joe Veltri from Horizons Unlimited.

Chamber Volunteer Awards will be presented to Stacy Gappa Brugman for providing technical expertise for the Chamber Annual Banquet; Tim McCain, who provided abstract work on the MidAmerican Energy building that was presented to the Chamber of Commerce; and to Val Morten and Darrick Young for their work with KEMB-LP.

Emmetsburg Chamber of Commerce Annual Banquet and Awards Celebration is Monday, Feb. 18. A social gathering begins at 6 p.m. Dinner of heavy hors doeuvres is at 6:30 p.m. Theme of the evening is "Planting the Seeds of the Future."
