A long-time supporter of t. Patrick's Day Celebration in Emmetsburg has bee chosen for the honor of Grand Marshal. Over her span of 44 years as first a writer and then the editor of the local newspaper, she has covered everything St. Pat's has offered over the years and was an Honorary Irishman in 2000. This year's Grand Marshal is Jane Whitmore.

According to Whitmore, the St. Patrick's Association sets itself apart from the norm and puts Emmetsburg on the map. Who else but a group of Irishmen would host a celebration in the winter? It's amazing to see the streets lined with people, either basking in sunshine or perching atop snow banks, to watch the annual parade.

"The greatest part of community journalism is getting to know the people," Whitmore said. "Working in Emmetsburg and Palo Alto County, we are in contact with every aspect of the community, from farming to industry to non-profit organizations. Over the span of 44 years at the newspaper, I have gotten to know Palo Alto County quite well.

When you truly enjoy each and every organization, it's not work to do the reporting," Whitmore continued. "And, you are working with friends. Who wouldn't like to have the opportunity to photograph an event like St. Pat's each year?"

Through the years, Whitmore has interviewed and gotten to know a great number of dignitaries from Ireland. According to her, each interview was a learning experience and all the dignitaries were all gracious guests.

For many years, Whitmore has made it a personal project to plant and tend to the flowers at the feet of Robert Emmet.

"He looks pretty handsome, standing on the pedestal on Courthouse Square, with pink petunias blooming all around," Whitmore said. "It is very gratifying to see tourists stop and take a photo with our town's namesake.

Thank you to Stephanie and Brent Mehan, Jason Bauer, Nick Fank, Kory Hagen, Denise Reimer, Corinda Walker, Stacy Nachreiner, Shawn Borning, Dave VanOosbree and Ashley Greene, members of the St. Patrick's Association Board of Directors," Whitmore added. " No one realizes how much work this board does through the year to plan the St. Pat's Celebration. And, thank you to my friend Chris Kliegl for her part in the nomination process. Never in my wildest dreams did I anticipate being Grand Marshal of the St. Patrick's Parade. Thank you for this honor."

Whitmore's schedule as Grand Marshal will include attending the

Sunday, March 10, Jr. Miss and Miss Shamrock pageants

Thursday, March 14, St. Pat's Headquarters Open House and Volunteer Irish Gathering

Friday, March 15, Chamber Coffee at St. Pat's Headquarters, and, Luncheon at Iowa Lakes Community College.

Saturday, March 16, St. Patrick's Parade.
